Seems straightforward to me. Hamm didn't really win--just because the scoring error was discovered a few hours after the deadline to protest does not mean he won. Keeping the medal seems petty and pointless--giving it up to the guy with the better performance would be gracious and the symbol of a true winner.

True-winner status doesn't go for as much as an Olympic gold on eBay.

Actually, it would be the symbol of fairness, or something like that. There's little Hamm can do at this point to make him the true winner, since he didn't win.
