Re: Long Live The Blog!

1

sob... but you'll be back to comment, right?

horizontal rule
2

god. I should learn to rtfp.

horizontal rule
3

I look forward to the blog under your real name.

horizontal rule
4

Man this is weird -- I had a dream the other night (not blogged because (a) I didn't remember enough of it and (b) the parts I did remember were mostly explicit in a way I don't like to wallow in -- which included a scene of looking at the Unfogged front page and seeing way more bloggers listed than I remembered being there before. And the new ones were mostly names I recognized from the Unfogged comments section! (Except Speak-speak, which turned out to be the new blogging handle of mcmc -- turns out my dream was not prescient in this regard but still it's pretty trippy.)

horizontal rule
5

Is Labs still going to post?

horizontal rule
6

I'd be very sad--if I believed you, ogged.

But then, I kinda do believe you, so I'm sorta incredulously sad.

horizontal rule
7

F'real????????

No way. I'm going to pitch a fit.

horizontal rule
8

JM -- you mean "incredibly sad" right? (wink)

horizontal rule
9

Well this certainly is a curious development. Best of luck ogged.

horizontal rule
10

Is it because of the addictive quality of Unfogged that you're quitting cold turkey, rather than allowing for occasionally dropping in? Hmm, maybe if I rtfp I would know it would be smart to email this question. Also, if you want teh content from your new bloggers, maybe someone could email us (or at least me) and tell us how to post? Hmm, maybe this is also better addressed in email.

But earnestly Ogged, thank you for creating this space. It really is fun, and helping other people have fun should not be overlooked as one of the great things a person can do in life. You are wizard cocksucker.

horizontal rule
11

Wow. So apparently neither Unf nor Ogged are essential properties of Unfogged!!

What is its essence? We don't know!

horizontal rule
12

Sad, but a really nice row of replacement talent. Enjoy the newfound time.

horizontal rule
13

hmm. I should also read my fucking email. Pwned.

horizontal rule
14

New name: Betiapolizben

horizontal rule
15

Does this mean we can count on Becks-style posting?

horizontal rule
16

Sceptical.

horizontal rule
17

I give him 9 days before he's back.

horizontal rule
18

Jesus Christ--I go away for a few days and the place falls apart.

Great to see some fresh blood on the posting side, but bummer. Who will we make fun of now?

horizontal rule
19

Will you change your mind, O., if I send you nekked pictures? Pretty please???

horizontal rule
20

Who will we make fun of now?

An ironic question considering its source...

horizontal rule
21

Is it pathetic that my heart accelerated when I started reading this post? Maybe or maybe not, but I appreciate that you've put as much effort into this place as you have. It won't be the same.

horizontal rule
22

I'm sorry to say he's deadly serious. I was going to hang it up too, but Alameida persuaded us to go with the expanded lineup, mainly because the comments are so good.

No pressure on you commenters or anything.

horizontal rule
23

and does this mean that we lose apostropher.com as our source of inanity? so many questions, and ogged isn't even around to answer them.

horizontal rule
24

Well, at least ogged isn't the only one saying farewell.

horizontal rule
25

Heart, breaking. Fuck.

horizontal rule
26

This is a soul crushing announcement.

horizontal rule
27

The expanded lineup is a good idea.

horizontal rule
28

I have to admit I'm feeling a pronounced lump in my throat, and I've only been around since the summer.

horizontal rule
29

Ogged, best of luck and thank you so much for creating this amazing community. I'm truly going to miss you here. Under any other circumstances, being invited to post would have made me feel like Charlie Bucket finding out he won the factory at the end of Willie Wonka but knowing you won't be around anymore makes it, at most, bittersweet. Best wishes.

horizontal rule
30

I expect I'll be riding by you on the lakeshore path without knowing it's you. I'm probably not the only one.

Good luck to you.

horizontal rule
31

Man, just when I'm getting used to the place. What'll you do with all your free time?

Best of luck, ogged. Thanks for providing this place.

horizontal rule
32

-gg-d, what an accomplishment to have set up this space! Sorry to see you go. I hope the second generation of Unfogged posters are going to be able to fill your "shoes".

horizontal rule
33

Typical Ogged -- he steals my idea to take it down a notch and simultaneously bring in greater group participation, then does me one better by leaving altogether.

"Why stand you looking into the sky, commenters? This same Ogged, who was received from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven."

Re: 19 -- did you forget to add "again"?

horizontal rule
34

And Becks, excellent thought to compare Unfogged to Wonka's factory. We are but Oompa-Loompas in the hands of an angry -gg-d. Or something like that. How can I work Norman Mailer into this?

horizontal rule
35

Noooooo!

*Sigh.* Okay.

I'll miss you, ogged. I'll hope to stumble across you out there somewhere...

horizontal rule
36

does this mean that we lose apostropher.com

No.

horizontal rule
37

Ogged is now going to have the vertiginous experience of attending his own online funeral.

The site has been a daily respite from the drudgery of the world- thanks for the effort O-man, and do stop by occasionally.

horizontal rule
38

Safe and sound at home again,

Let the waters roar, Ogged.

Safe and sound at home again,

Let the waters roar, Ogged.

Long we've tossed on the rolling main.

Now we're safe ashore, Ogged.

Don't forget your old shipmates.

Rolly, Rolly, Rolly, Rolly, rye-oh!

horizontal rule
39

Dammit! This is sad news. We'll miss you, Brother O.

Congrats to the new crew, of course.

horizontal rule
40

ogged...sniff.

horizontal rule
41

That's a bummer, but I can't say I'm totally surprised. And somehow I believe it will stick (feel free to prove me wrong).

Just reading this drove home how consuming managing unfogged must be. I look lately and see comment threads of 300, and I just can't summon the energy to read them, though they're often still as funny as hell.

It's pretty cool what you created here. I hope you find a way to bring that creativity and community building to some of your projects IRL. Drop a line and let us know what it's like out there.

horizontal rule
42

To cry, to cry, to masturbate, and not stop crying.

horizontal rule
43

Will you change your mind, O., if I send you nekked pictures? Pretty please???

You'd better specify whom they'd be pictures of.

horizontal rule
44

...as some of you have suspected...

Who suspected? And on what grounds?

horizontal rule
45

#43: I'm too old for O, so I will line up concubines aplenty if he'll just agree not to abandon me like this.....

horizontal rule
46

44: A sobering Becks-style comment.

horizontal rule
47

Better still would be to send O nekkid pics of himself, with the implication that it would be a shame if anything happened to them.

horizontal rule
48

I forgot to mention what a cool lineup Alameida had picked out of the regulars. It has great potential.

Now I really wished I'd made it to the fucking meet-up in DC, too.

horizontal rule
49

Damn, I'm bummed, although I'm really glad to hear about the new front-pagers. LizardBreath will be awesome. (Well, they all will.)

I hope that you'll come back for an occasional visit--especially when some cool new technology thing arrives. An occasional comment would be much appreciated. And if you ever make it to Boston, jvance/tweedledopey, any lurkers and I will have to host you for a meet-up.

horizontal rule
50

Yes, Becks, Tia, LB and Apostropher were my four favorite commenters.

horizontal rule
51

Is this when we all reveal our long-standing blog-crushes on Ogged?

horizontal rule
52

Flash forward, flash back.

horizontal rule
53

The introduction of LizardBreath as a primary contributor to Unfogged will go down in history as an epochal moment in the history of Blog.

That's right, not blogs but Blog -- this is our generation's Ereignis in the history of the sheltering and sending of Blog.

horizontal rule
54

SB, you're making me cry. Stop it.

horizontal rule
55

Oh, he would just have been writing about toast and squirrels all the time anyway. (Trying to be non-prissy about it.) Bye, Ogged. Best of luck.

horizontal rule
56

Yeah, me too. And I hate crying, it's so unbitchy. Goddamn you all.

horizontal rule
57

I was just looking for the comment eb linked to in 46.

It's sad because I, like everyone else, looked to unfogged for a daily dose of levity and community.

But, on another level, it isn't surprising. Blogs have a life cycle. Running a blog like this requires constant tending and at some point it's time to go and do something different.

Ogged -- you were a fabulous host, we're all sad to see you go, hopefully you can enjoy yourself without us.

horizontal rule
58

Hm, apostropher is ging to have to do the cock jokes all by himself. The feminization of America proceeds apace. Call Bill Bennett or whoever it is that does that meme.

Best wishes, and you held out as long as anyone should.

horizontal rule
59

Someday you will find me, caught beneath a landslide, in a wicked champagne mineshaft in the sky....

(waving lighter in the air, clenching teeth to prevent weeping)

horizontal rule
60

A comment box now contains her, for whom the Mineshat was not enough.

horizontal rule
61

Yes, Unfogged's great and Ogged deserves a lot of the credit.

Best of luck w the reset tivo.

horizontal rule
62

Holy shit!

horizontal rule
63

62 gets it exactly right. Cala, is mineshat the past tense form of mineshit?

horizontal rule
64

For whom the bell tolls, for whom the mine shat, it's all the same, really.

horizontal rule
65

Man. This sucks for us. ogged, you brought a certain je ne sais quoi to this joint. And I really mean a je ne sais quoi bc I'm trying to describe what I'll miss about having you posting and commenting and I can't quite do it.

The expanded lineup sounds great, though!

Good luck to you, ogged.

horizontal rule
66

Man, talk about stage fright -- it's all safe and cozy down here in the comments box. People I don't know actually read the posts.

I didn't realize that Ogged was planning not even to comment -- that completely stinks, and I'll miss him; he's run a great blog. I just hope we don't run the place into the ground before he relents and comes back. (I see this as an "Ogier the Dane" type story. Someday, when the Internet's need is greatest, Ogged will return!)

horizontal rule
67

And I really mean a je ne sais quoi bc I'm trying to describe what I'll miss about having you posting and commenting and I can't quite do it.

Ogged was always the perfect host. One of the traits common to both blog commenters and acadmics is a brittle competativeness. I think part of how unfogged was able to maintain a balance between enjoying cutting comments and one-upsmanship while keeping a strong feeling of camaraderie is that ogged was so willing to play the straight man.

We all knew that it was okay to be teased because the entire purpose of the blog was teasing ogged.

horizontal rule
68

Ogged, you bastard, I will hunt you down and make you pay for this. Don't let your guard down, even for a second.

That's the non-prissy way to say it, people! Seriously, thanks for the good times, don't forget to write (say, if you're in a meetup-possible place), and may you find piece.

Unfogged is dead, long live unfogged! First proposal: SB gets posting privileges too.

horizontal rule
69

Damn. Sad to see you go, ogged.

But the very best of luck to you, and best of luck to FL and Alameida and the new crew.

horizontal rule
70

66 -- we will keep the legend alive through the bitter Nordic winters as we await his return. ATM.

horizontal rule
71

#67 gets it exactly right.

horizontal rule
72

and may you find piece.

Piece of what exactly? of Action perhaps?

I pretty much echo everything that Reniew said above.

horizontal rule
73

Hic iacet Oggedus, blogger quondam bloggerque futurus.

horizontal rule
74

I was trying to find the answer to Cala's question in 11, but after looking through the first couple weeks of comments and then realizing I had acutal work to do, I can't find the authentic first-in-time comment from either apo or b-wo, one of whom, by dint of service, presumably currently embodies the essence of unfogged.

horizontal rule
75

I'm so sad I can't even type strait.

horizontal rule
76

But we should not give up hope! den Beste returned, didn't he?

horizontal rule
77

Oh no. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no, no, no. This won't do at all. Not at all. Oh no, impossible. Simply won't do.

horizontal rule
78

I'll bet Ogged comes back to play for the Wizards.

horizontal rule
79

And, new people? TAKE INSTAPUNDIT OFF THE FUCKING BLOGROLL, please.

horizontal rule
80

Replace with LGF?

horizontal rule
81

Powerline.

horizontal rule
82

Vox Day.

horizontal rule
83

Not that it won't be entirely thrilling to read whole posts from many of my favorite commenters. I second the move to give Standpipe posting privileges, if Standpipe so desires.

Ogged, our Ogged, how we will miss you!

horizontal rule
84

No, apostropher, that would not do. Lawyers, Guns and Money?

horizontal rule
85

Tempting Defiance, first of all.

horizontal rule
86

Second Bostoniangirl. Second vote for Standpipe. More Standpipe!

(This comment is in no way to be construed as constituting acceptance of Ogged's departure. I am still in mourning, and shall not give up my weeds so soon.)

horizontal rule
87

Wait, the Instapundit link isn't required by law? Ogged lied to us? In that case, good riddance to him.

I think we should adopt The Fafblog's color scheme. Giving them all due credit, of course.

horizontal rule
88

And, new people? TAKE INSTAPUNDIT OFF THE FUCKING BLOGROLL, please.

Sure, right after I turn the blog pink.

horizontal rule
89

Jinx.

horizontal rule
90

Emerson.

horizontal rule
91

SpeakSpeak shall hearafter be known as SuessSpeak.

horizontal rule
92

Emerson and Bostoniangirl. And Standpipe.

horizontal rule
93

How about a standpipe and text amalgam? I'm sure StandText would agree to it.

horizontal rule
94

well, this sure helps that "damn, if only i'd found this site years ago" feeling i've had since i got here.

isn't there a liberal blog clause requiring that you add yglesias?

horizontal rule
95

Okay, so, is anyone going to be left in the comments? I don't want to be here by myself.

horizontal rule
96

OK. Brain starting to recover now.

Ogged, so long, farewell, and thanks. Unfogged is the bestest imaginary gay bar blog on the whole internet, and much of the credit goes to you. Your leather chaps Speedos will hang from the rafters forevermore.

And congrats to the new ruling junta crew of front page bloggers.

horizontal rule
97

I guess pretty much all regulars would make fine posters. Maybe overkill.

horizontal rule
98

As many times as I've quit my own blog, I've never been able to quit Unfogged. It's sad to see you go ogged, but I look forward to the new posters who, I should note, are not technically co-bloggers and thus should not be subject to the rule that co-bloggers fall silent. Hopefully.

New posters: I say you draw lots and the winner (loser?) has to post first.

horizontal rule
99

Arms, I'll still be here. After all, I gotta figure out someway to drive everyone away from unfogged and to jvance. but then again, that'd require posting something relevant i guess. plus, i think maintaining 1 bajillion comments would suck. so i'll stay here, and make it suck for teh ogged junta.

Fare teeh well, teh Ogged.

horizontal rule
100

I'm here with you, Smasher!

More fun in the bushes.

horizontal rule
101

As many times as I've quit my own blog, I've never been able to quit Unfogged.

Who wants to be the first with the Brokeback Mountain joke?

(On preview, Drymala, I guess.)

horizontal rule
102

We shall remain here in the underworld, all sneaky-like.

Less chance of being burned by the sunlight.

horizontal rule
103

And, earnestly, amazing things you've done, Ogged. We'll miss you.

horizontal rule
104

Oh! And ogged? Assuming you're still here to read this, I'd just like to point out that quitting blogging is teh ghey.

horizontal rule
105

I'm a pleb with you, Smasher. No one would let me post after the grime of its wandering debacle.

horizontal rule
106

This saddens me, as well, and I only discovered Unfogged two weeks ago.

It is a testament to greatness that a Becks, a Tia, the Apostropher, a Lizardbreath, and a Ben Wolfson each make 1/5 of an Ogged.

horizontal rule
107

104: it's teh prissy.

horizontal rule
108

Smasher, I'll be here too. Dr. B wasn't nominating me for posting privileges. (I'd be pretty awful, since I get most of my news filtered through blogs anyway.)

86 was seconding my proposal in 84 to put LG&M on the blogroll.

horizontal rule
109

It is a testament to greatness that a Becks, a Tia, the Apostropher, a Lizardbreath, and a Ben Wolfson each make 1/5 of an Ogged.

It's Battle of the Planets! We stand on each other's shoulders and spin, and magically turn into a giant flaming Ogged!

horizontal rule
110

Wonder Quintuplets powers, ACTIVATE!

horizontal rule
111

a giant flaming Ogged

I.e., Ogged after he's come to terms with the truth about himself.

Fuck, I'm going to miss him.

horizontal rule
112

95, 100, 105, 108: Me also.

horizontal rule
113

112: me too!

111 makes me very sad.

horizontal rule
114

Fuck, I'm going to miss him.

Miss, I'm going to fuck him.

horizontal rule
115

114 makes everything better.

horizontal rule
116

My bit of earnestness:

The community you've fostered here is remarkable, O-man. You're going out on top, and it will never be the same.

horizontal rule
117

I'll cop to agreeing with #52.

horizontal rule
118

Tim, I'm glad you're still alive.

horizontal rule
119

Weiner:

A ssuming all the new posters agree to Becks-blog, it should be fine.

horizontal rule
120

B, T, A, LB, BWo: Traitors! Sure, you say now that you know what it's like to be a commenter, and how could you forget about a commenter's concerns?, but soon enough the sidebar will look like a Michelle Malkin linkdump. Traitors! The rest of us will be down below, down in the nasty, and we're keeping an eye on you.

horizontal rule
121

We did naught but heed the call of the current co-blogger who asked us to keep the ship afloat. What is that but the deepest loyalty?

horizontal rule
122

Just hoping to sow the seeds of revolution should that Instapundit link not come down.

horizontal rule
123

Tear that link down!

horizontal rule
124

123: We could get the chipmunks to do a song urging just that. Where's Standpipe when we need him to parody Alvin, Simon and Theodore?

horizontal rule
125

doot doot dododoot

horizontal rule
126

Best of luck, ogged, and thanks.

horizontal rule
127

oops. dododoot s/b dodododoot

horizontal rule
128

So, I posted something.

horizontal rule
129

well, because they will be affected, more or less, by the district they currently reside in, and not the district they commited the crime in or used to reside in. now, if you wanted to change the census based on how long they will be in prison, I'd be all for that. but enough of this legal person counting mumbo jumbo.

horizontal rule
130

shit. wrong thread.

horizontal rule
131

I'll still be a commenter. I think there's a kind of strict settlement involved in the torch-passing that prohibits me, ever, from being invited to be an Unfogged blogger. Thank god, b/c I've got my own goddamn blog.

But hey, in the bushes with y'all? Way, way more fun.

horizontal rule
132

129: shit. wrong thread.

horizontal rule
133

weird.

horizontal rule
134

This is so sad! I mean, the new bloggers are great and all. But it just won't be the same. You're the only one who actually ever read my comments! Also, I doubt that the new bloggers will be as eager to equate intellectual honesty with the willingness to air one's least flattering opinions.

Still, thanks for the memories.

horizontal rule
135

Sorry to be so callous, but isn't this the weblog that doesn't need webloggers, where all the cool action goes on in the comments? You could just replace Ogged with one of those automatic open thread generators like Atrios uses, only with racier keywords, and presto...Unfogged-o-matic!

(OK, seriously, this is sad news. Unfogged was one of the first weblogs I picked up on, way back in the day when I started my own weblog.)

horizontal rule
136

Fuck! What the fuck?

I'll still be here in the comments, even though I've been absent of late due to too much fucking work. The one thing to mitigate the sadness is the awesomeness of the new co-bloggers.

Bye, ogged. Good times.

horizontal rule
137

No one asked my permission for this change, I'd just like to note. I'll be around in the comments, until Wolfson bans me.

Oh blog! it is a gentle thing,

Beloved from mineshaft to mineshaft!

To swarthy Ogged the praise be given!

He sent the gentle cockjoke from Heaven,

That slid into my soul.

horizontal rule
138

Who'll read a blog called Unfogged where nobody named Unf or Ogged posts? It just doesn't make sense!

horizontal rule
139

138: me, that's who.

horizontal rule
140

Wow, judging by the first day's posts, the blog is exponentially better now.

horizontal rule
141

It's a good sign that LB got 50 comments so soon. I have noticed that while Alameida have some of the best posts, they don't usually get that many comments.

horizontal rule
142

I think there's a "Clap your hands if you believe in fairies" effect going on. People really don't want the blog to shut down.

horizontal rule
143

Where would we all go if it shut down? God, that'd be teh weird.

horizontal rule
144

Yes, Becks, Tia, LB and Apostropher were my four favorite commenters.

Hey, screw you, Weman!

horizontal rule
145

Good fortune in your new world, Ogged. Write when you find work. Save your money so you can send for us to join you soon. Thank you.

horizontal rule
146

Write when you find work.

And remember to hang by your thumbs.

horizontal rule
147

Yo, all - I set this to appear at the top of the page through the end of the day so that people who are just now showing up can figure out WTF is going on. New posts will show up under this one.

horizontal rule
148

So you're the new administrator behind the scenes?

horizontal rule
149

I don't know, putting this back at the top forces one to confront the sadness which subsequent posts had helped to mitigate.

horizontal rule
150

eb - Nah, just mucking around.

w/d - I know. I debated. I sent an email out to get input from the others and got another vote for making it sticky so I went for it. I must say, there are some benefits to Ogged's benevolent dictatorship. Much less second-guessing oneself, I assume.

horizontal rule
151

As a long time lurker, I just have to say: ogged, you were great and you will be missed. Now I have to go and CCMC...

horizontal rule
152

Damn, I go to class for one day and everything changes. Good luck, ogged; you were a fantastic host.

horizontal rule
153

I go to class for one day

You're going to be in school a very long time.

horizontal rule
154

Don't I know it.

horizontal rule
155

Unfoogged will probably - depending on people's posting frequencies - be a msotly female blog now. I like that a lot.

horizontal rule
156

I bite my tongue.

(still too soon?)

horizontal rule
157

Four of the seven bloggers are female. Three of the seven are parents.

It's a brave new world.

horizontal rule
158

one ring to rule them all, or something like that, right apo?

horizontal rule
159

At last, I've given this enough considerate thought to write my thoughtful, mature, sincere response to this abrupt news.

Dearest Ogged,

YOU'RE LEAVING ME? YOU THINK IT'S THAT SIMPLE? YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST UP AND LEAVE? FUCK YOU, PAL! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT: FUCK. YOU. You know what? I never really loved you. I was just using you! I NEVER RESPECTED YOU! And. And, guess what? I WAS CHEATING ON YOU! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! SO GO AHEAD AND LEAVE! I don't NEED YOU! I don't WANT YOU! Just GO AHEAD AND LEAVE! I DON'T CARE!!!

wait, I'm not sure that came out right...

horizontal rule
160

I bet ogged's real name is shane.

Come back Shane!!!!!

horizontal rule
161

158: More Gilligan's Island than Lord of the Rings, but sure, that works too.

horizontal rule
162

Ok, so Wolfson is the professor. Are you the skipper? And what does that make Fontana?

horizontal rule
163

Where would we all go if it shut down? God, that'd be teh weird.

We would wander about aimlessly for a time and finally lie down on the ground and wait for death to overtake us.

horizontal rule
164

Labs is Ginger, obviously.

horizontal rule
165

Matt, mcmc, B—thank you for the write-in votes! But it's the comments for me.

horizontal rule
166

Does this mean that we'll never get the conflict between "remember vertical position" and "remember personal info" resolved?

horizontal rule
167

Fontana's The Professor by virtue of being a professor. Wolfson is my little buddy.

horizontal rule
168

all best to you ogged, in case you are still reading this thread. all best to all. and best all to best.

horizontal rule
169

Dear Ogged,

It was nice to have met you. I hope to meet you again someday.

horizontal rule
170

I was too busy during the day to compose my thoughts. Now that I've had some time:

Shit. Thanks. Bye.

horizontal rule
171

Hmm. My numlock seems to have turned itself on spontaneously. 170 was the robot form of me.

While I'm at it: here's hoping your writing finds its way online in some other form, ogged. Time to start combing through livejournal.

horizontal rule
172

Hey if you guys are going to monkey with the color scheme, why not also add a subtitle such as, "The Whole World's Only Source For Unfogged! (Unf and Ogged no longer available)"

horizontal rule
173

How about a standpipe and text amalgam? I'm sure StandText would agree to it.

If someone ran text and me through the amalgmotron, I think you'd get a Textpipe or a Textplate. Whereas you would click on StandText with an IntelliMouse.

horizontal rule
174

you might get a Bridgetext. Or a Pipestand Platebridge txet.

horizontal rule
175

Hey if you guys are going to monkey with the color scheme

Nooooooo!

Oh, phewph, you meant hypothetically.

I'm going to start my own line of little rubber bracelets, CHANGEBAD.

horizontal rule
176

Textpipe is teh Imposter!

horizontal rule
177

Don't worry, Standpipe. I'm about thisclose to curling up in the corner and muttering "time for Wapner" over and over myself.

horizontal rule
178

Well done my good and faithful servant and all that shit.

Well, this blows. Not even comments, Ogged? Really? I feel like I'm losing a friend, or at least a nutty, slightly creepy uncle.

Jesus CHRIST, w/d, I beg you (and everyone else for that mater) to follow this maxim.

Please???

While it's the comments that make this site really special, I also like the entries--both what they say and what they call attention to. I'm bummed that Ogged's doing this.

There really does seem to be a blog lifecycle.

horizontal rule

Just vound you und now you, how you say it, pees off?

horizontal rule

Who'll read a blog called Unfogged where nobody named Unf or Ogged posts? It just doesn't make sense!

Well, unf is gone and ogged is getting tributes to his amazing rack charming personality, ergo, the f should be dropped and it should be Un-ogged.

You could go all arts & crafts and make it Un-ogged Labs. (But it's a corporate entity so it ought to be Un-ogged Labs, Ltd.)

Fog gone, snow melting = bright green color scheme with flowers and shit! And spice racks.

I guess that makes me the nutty, slightly creepy great-uncle.

To me, the reason ogged leaving sucks so much is that his posts formed the infrastructure of unfogged. I love reading the other authors' stuff, but ogged's entries were unique in their economy of length and style. And they were almost always about either a) topics on which the commentariat was likely to have at least two defensible opinions; or b) Mineshaftellania.

Plus, the guy was uniquely diplomatic in comments, lulling dopes like myself into participating in conversations that can be pretty intimidating. I'm not sure how much of that came naturally and how much was a deliberate effort to make strangers feel welcome. If it was more of the latter, I can see how someone might get sick of doing it.

Anyway, here's selfishly hoping his source of reliable sex disappears and he comes crawling back to us internet weirdos.

horizontal rule

Best of luck to you, ogged. i know i never commented much, but i always enjoyed your posts.

*waves to the new bloggers* 'ello!

horizontal rule

Thanks, Ogged, for having had the will power to set this up and stay with it for so long. This place has changed a good deal of my outlook in the last year.

horizontal rule

188 -- for the better or the worse? Or orthogonal to good/bad distinctions?

horizontal rule

Are we going to get a new set of "Abouts" in the top left hand corner?

horizontal rule
191

We better! That is the only we my premonitory dream can be realized.

horizontal rule
192

Ok, this looks great, but will there be new fellowships available for those of us wanting to keep reading the comment threads?

horizontal rule
193

"this" = the new Unfogged

horizontal rule
194

J.O. I meant to imply "for the better."

horizontal rule
195

Sorry to see you go, ogged, even though i suspect you're just one good cock joke away.

An era ends. Another begins. Someone play taps now while I weep silently.

By the way, I blame Wolfson.

horizontal rule
196

No way I'm reading 195 comments before posting a comment.

I wrote the following on another blog, which doesn't permalink comments. Might as well repost it here:

"...forgiving Ogged's decision to leave Unfogged, for example."

I'm disappointed, though it's hard to fault someone for such a decision.

But I've watched over that little blog since befre it went live (weeks before), since when they first started experimenting with a template, and all it said was "this will go here; that will go there," they used my blog, and mine alone, as a sample of the blogroll, which is how I found it, and in those days, M-, Ogged would write me with touching requests for advice about How To Blog, and I would offer my fatherly advice in e-mail.

Eventually the blog wandered into something far afield from what it was in its first year or so, and while it was a valuable and good thing it turned into, providing a unique venue for those it was most attuned to, I never felt myself at more than the fringes of that zeitgeist, but it was a good and unique thing for those closer to the core, nontheless.

Now there will be no one there who was present at the creation, and that selfishly saddens me a bit.

Not that I've not watched several other group blogs long ago make that transition. (Kesher Talk, for instance).

I remember when Volokh was a singleton, and had no Conspiracy. I remember when Glenn Reynolds was sane. I remember when all of us small number of polibloggers all knew each other, and all were blogging in a frame in which while we had small differences of opinion, none were so far afield that we couldn't think we were in it together. After a couple of years, echo-chambers took over, and small differences became huge, and it seems as if half the people went insane. Christ, I remember when LGF was -- I know this is hard to believe now -- a perfectly sane and calm place.

I can't say that the blogosphere has actually improved with growth and age, much though there are innumerable valuable new voices, to be sure. But overall: sadly, no.

I'm starting to feel a bit old in the blogosphere, and it's only been a freaking four and a half years, for god's sake. And I'm not first generation nor second. It's worse than dog years.

Gary, are you saying you knew Unfogged before it sold out and went all commercial?

horizontal rule
198

I've been doing it for just over three years, Gary, and I feel like a grizzled veteran.

horizontal rule
199

I'm sad. Ogged is gone, and Pharyngula is gone, and Kotsko is limiting his posts, and . . . Bitch, that latest post of yours is so ominous. O blogs of my life, I need you to love me, I need you to stay. Is love so fragile, is the heart so hollow?

horizontal rule
200

I think pharyngula just moved.

horizontal rule
201

See the second window, where the glow of the television screen is flickering? I used to live there twenty years agao, seeing a girl by the name of Celine.

This place has changed a lot.

horizontal rule
202

I'm not quitting. I'm too fucking stubborn.

horizontal rule
203

Good to see you again, Gary. I was wondering if you'd abandoned Unfogged in anger after Ogged had threatened to strangle you if you made one more revelation about your sexual history. (At least that's my recollection, although I can't seem to find the comment in question.)

horizontal rule
204

Hey, at least Farber has plentiful fodder, Fred.

horizontal rule
205

Now that I am one of the co-bloggers, new rule: No one can be faulted for tiresomely nattering about their sex life!

horizontal rule
206

Gary is, actually, the owner of this blog by right.

horizontal rule
207

you aren't really a co-blogger until your name is on the left column.

horizontal rule
208

that's Gary's rule, and he owns this place.

Serial posting is to be encouraged.

horizontal rule
209

Gary is actually ogged.

horizontal rule
210

I am LizardBreath.

horizontal rule
211

Gary is Mexican?

horizontal rule
212

nobody ever figured it out. my secret dies with me. and everyone who reads this thread.

tonight.

horizontal rule
213

211: No, Gary's black.

horizontal rule
214

Text, if you're Lizard Breath, then mu simultaneous blog crush and sense of identification means . . . I have a blog crush on myself!

Existential crisis, or narcissism? You decide.

horizontal rule
215

It means your crush on text is purely illusory. Return to me, Bitch, and all is forgiven.

horizontal rule
216

mu, my, whatever.

horizontal rule
217

I just found out that you left me out of your gossip loop, Apostropher, and I am pouting.

horizontal rule
218

All I did was hit 'Reply All', dear.

horizontal rule
219

existential crises are all about narcissism. I see no conflict. let's make sweet blog love!

horizontal rule
220

Shit. Another good pout blows up in my face.

Time for the narcissistic blog orgy!

horizontal rule
221

all ready? go!

horizontal rule
222

Oh yeah, baby. I make me so hot.

horizontal rule
223

I'm sorry, this isn't working for me. No, no. It's not you. It's me.

horizontal rule
224

this never happens. really.

horizontal rule
225

I understand, ogged.

But, well. Sniff. Sigh. Sniff.

(I'd leave some sniffs and sighs for Unf, but when's the last time that guy posted here, anyway? And I'm impressed by the new lineup. But still. Sniff. Sigh. Sniff).

horizontal rule
226

Sniff. Sigh. Sniff.

You can still smell him? Geez, we'll never get that odor out of here.

horizontal rule
227

That sidebar looks a bit different.
