Re: Durbinmania!

Dude! Do we have to stage an intervention?

Aaargh, I clicked the link and saw a Chris Muir strip. You. Will. Pay. For. This.

Help! I'm trapped in a fever swamp!

First, Paul's trick here is just to play with who has the burden of demonstrating what the AUMF meant. Why should the Senator have to prove he didn't mean to release the executive branch from FISA when he voted for the AUMF, other than just saying so? The executive has very little argument for their view, other than a bare assertion.

Second, the answer to Paul's question isn't tricky, it is, "The plain text of the statutes combined with the canon against implicit repeal."

Third, if Paul ever interviews anyone again, they should probably just respond by asking Paul why he thinks Jimmy Carter should be thrown in jail and or executed.

i feel very strongly that the poweline boys should be referred to by their gay handles former monikers forever.

also, labs gets it exactly right. this is why they don't have comments.

You want to hear disturbing? Last night I dreamed that I was marrying Al Gonzales. The clothes were unusual, because I wore a dark pant suit. Somehow, the British royal family was involved, because the implication was that I was marrying into an important, well-connected family.

I had to be coached about what I was going to say when asked about my views on the NSA wiretapping and its constitutionality under the Jackson standard, because, obviously, I was against it. I got coached by a guy who looked like a good-looking blonde version of Jamie Rubin only with straight hair. I remember thinking that he looked like a Democratic operative. So maybe there was sme sort of covert spy action going on.

So, I show up to meet Gonzales, and it had the definite feeling of an arranged marriage, because I kept thinking that I have to remember to call him Al and not Abu (as in Abu Ghraib). There was a definite Notorious vibe.

So then, it's not clear that it's the actual wedding, and the scene is more like an engagement party, and a bunch of reporters ask me my opinion of the President's power to to ignore FISA. And I say demurely, like a proper Republican wife, that I don't comment on issues relating to my husband's work. Then I lean my head on his shoulder. And the omniscient viewer sees him look down on my head in a loving but vaguely creepy wa, and he squeezed my hand. And I thought, damn, I have to sleep with this man--only feel sort ofnurturing toward him at the same time. T

hen, mercifully, I woke up.

So will you all do an intervention? Will the unfoggedariat be my Cary Grant and save me from this awful marriage?

horizontal rule
7

Oh, and afterI answer the reprters questions, hee shoos the reporters away with me leaning on his shoulder, saying that he's just gotten married an wants to spend some time alone with his lovely bride, and they can all understand that. Gulp.

horizontal rule
8

Don't we have to wait for you to find the WMD first?

horizontal rule
9

But if we're Cary Grant, it's our fault you're in the situation in the first place.

horizontal rule
10

Ugh. "Oh, and after I answer the reporters' questions, he"

horizontal rule
11

It probably is our fault.

horizontal rule
12

Don't we have to wait for you to find the WMD first?

Maybe that's the problem, because in the contemporary version, there are no WMD to be found, so I'll never get out of there.

horizontal rule
13

10: Yes?

horizontal rule
14

One sympathizes more and more with the initial impulse behind the Stalinist purges, even if it didn't work out very well in practice.

13: He shoos the reporters away. I woke up after that. THANK GOD. But I guess this also means that I have a huge crush on the collective unfoggedariat, since I admitted to having had a crush on Cary Grant for as long as I can remember. Such beautiful suits he wore.

But... he did answer the question. Did the instapaunchit just not notice?

BG, my oddest dream was of Adolf Hitler's mother coming to dinner at our house, and we had to avoid mentioning WWII, Jews, her late son, or anything else that might upset her. Then one of my very Jewish friends barged into the room and went right up to her. It turned out that they were both stamp collecters and they had a great talk.

Last night I dreamed about apostropher. True.

And what was the dream?

Wouldn't you like to know.

Yes. Yes, I would.

Were you the Pentagon?

Can I be the Vietnam Veterans' memorial?

Wait, apo gets to approve old comments now, in addition to Becks and Wolfson?

horizontal rule

That's the way Ogged set it up, I guess. I approved your last comment on the Innocence thread.

horizontal rule
33

Wait, this game is rigged now. I want to be able to approve comments too.

horizontal rule
34

I think anyone can approve comments if they log into MT but Ben and I are the only ones who get the spamilicious emails.

horizontal rule
35

That's okay then.

Amusing.

Somebody's IP got banned overnight for excessive commenting. We had a big spam surge so I don't know if it's from that or if it was one of you guys who got accidentally banned b/c the server went nuts. If you can't comment today, shoot me an email.

(Oops - that was supposed to go on the server stuff thread.)
