Have fun! Don't forget to drink too much!

Have a great time, LB.

Apostropher, life remains worth living:

Glen "Big Baby" Davis, a shot-blocking freshman and the rest of the Tigers are one win away from the Final Four after J.J. Redick and top-seeded Duke stumbled again in the round of 16.

...

Redick, a favorite for player of the year, had one of his worst games in the finale of his college career. The Duke guard made only 3-of-18 shots, his shooting woes dooming a team that got a big performance from its other star, Shelden Williams.

LB - I've mentioned before getting into arguments with one of my roommates about the merits of many of Spitzer's prosecutions. I just had another one and tried to read up on him a little bit, but I didn't find out that much (I also read a number of responses to the linked post). I'd certainly appreciate a post on this if you wanted to put one together, especially since he's so obviously the next governor. Also, have fun at the wedding.

Are weddings still fun when you don't have the chance to hook up with some totally random person?

horizontal rule
5

At the very least, you need some other people around you looking to hook up, so you can follow their progress. Otherwise, what's the point of these things, really?

I am aware that it diminishes me as a person to feel pleasure in this, but I do. It just won't be the same hating on Greg Paulus next year.

Not really.

A friend of mine once went to a wedding at a private house where she had sex with some French guy in the room where they were keeping the coats, which was right next to one of the bathrooms that all the guests were using. And, as she noticed in the middle, the door was ajar.

She would tell this story in dramatic fashion, describing how she heard her parents voices right outside, &c. Now that's a wedding.

French guys are like that.

In Minnesota a wedding is only valid if someone in the bride's party gets into a drunken brawl with someone from the groom's party. Preferably not the two fathers-in-law, though.

I've been in more weddings than I've been to. I am proud to say that I succeeded in the primary task of a groomsman: make the groom look good by comparison.

This potrait of wedding occurences and opportunities is making my head spin. Somewhere, Joan Didion has someone say, "They're the kind of people who don't drink at weddings." My young self read that and thought: "but, we're the kind of people who don't drink at weddings." You can imagine how mythical these goings-on seem to me; Hey! let's hitch up our unicorns!

Periodically in my life I've had a Gadsby-like glimpse of other lives lived all around me, which I've ached to be able to join. First time was when a cohort of kids joined my public high school in the tenth grade, I later found out it was because their parents didn't want to pay the tuition for Bishop Watterson. Two girls stick in my memory, one I had a hopeless crush on for years, the other, calmly intellectual, was receptive to me and not pursuing her is one of the regrets of my life. What knocked me over is how they talked freely of sex, not to be outdone by boys, and gave as good as they got. I'd never met anyone like that.

D'oh. I've outed my gender! This anonymity stuff is hard.

#11 is my po'trait.

This would require that you had been in some wedding which you did not attend.

horizontal rule
15

Is that so implausible?

15 -- I don't think you can say you were in the wedding if you did not make it -- if you had been a part of the wedding party but took ill or blew it off, or if you were the groom and left your fiancee waiting at the altar (or vice versa), it would not make sense to say you had been "in the wedding".

How dare you parse my cleverness! I was asserting a loftier quality to in-ness than that of mere to-ness. Do band members just go to the concerts in which they perform? Do marchers merely go to a parade? I am a drunken doofus artiste, dammit.

My cousin's wife got so drunk at her own wedding that she passed out in the reception hall. Her mother woke her up to tell her she was disgraceful, and dragged her off to the honeymoon suite and locked her in. I informed my cousin of this, but he didn't seem terribly bothered, and stayed downstairs drinking with his friends at least an hour longer.

You are a goddess to me, staring at the green light on your dock.

For having a hard-drinking family?

horizontal rule

Yes, and everything that implies about an attitude towards life. The longing a North American protestant can have toward a life that tolerates and seeks pleasure and self-indulgence would amaze you.

It was a fun wedding--sitting around drinking with my aunts and uncles while they told stories and broke into song. Plus the added bride passing out drama.

A memory like that would be priceless to me, but it would seem like a dream, like somebody else's life.
