Re: Because Cartoons Aren't Real

1

Wow. If only I had a fast connection, that would be awesome.

2

Either my daughter already knows about this, or my machines will now not sleep for days. But I feel a duty to pass this on, regardless of the consequences.

horizontal rule
3

It's probably ok to kill your neighbor and use his, since we're living in a time of lawlessness.

horizontal rule
4

regardless of the consequences

You daughter will GO TO JAIL!!!!

horizontal rule

3:Is my audience catching up with me?

Better check 1 or 2 first;pain in the butt to get something and find it is all in Finnish, without subtitles. Unless all the people here except me speak Finnish.

horizontal rule
6

Surely your potential advice to "enjoy" is sarcastic, in re: Family Guy and American Dad.

Futurama, on the other hand, may be the best show ever.

horizontal rule
7

What are you on about, McManus?

horizontal rule
8

All the people on here speak, read, and type exclusively in Finnish. Except you.

horizontal rule
9

I think some Finnish guy tried this with Calvin & Hobbes ... didn't last.

horizontal rule
10

7:Which joke do you need explained?

Not that you really need to kill your neighbour, when you can just park outside and use his wireless broadband. but "time of lawlessness" is music to my ears.

horizontal rule
11

RMcMP, say it isn't so. You don't like Family Guy?

horizontal rule
12

Re topic:I think Yglesias says any non-payment of intellectual rents above what is socially necessary to maintain creativity is morally permissable.

Watched Henry Rollins discuss piracy with some old hardcore buddy of his the other night;it wasn't very interesting. Henry Rollins on IFC comes off not so far from George Clooney's dad on AMC. Rollins was always more poet than punk anyway. The day the music died:Rollins joins Black Flag.

horizontal rule
13

The problem with the simpsons episodes is that they're the crappy syndicated versions, with multiple edits to make them shorter and allow Fox to sell more ads. Eg, we don't get to hear Hank Scorpio offer Homer cream in "You Only Move Twice".

horizontal rule
14

Saatanan Perkele!

horizontal rule
15

I firmly believe that "Family Guy" is the shit.

horizontal rule
16

What ben says in 13 is extraordinarily important. And it's not like they remove filler, either -- it's usually the most subversive (and ergo funniest) jokes.

horizontal rule
17

I got this feedback from a friend of a friend:

"I looked at the source code and there are some google and other various spyware elements on there. Probably some viruses too no doubt. Fortunately, I am protected at the moment. Be wary of any sites offering that kind of stuff, it may take your PC down in a heartbeat."

I don't see how this can be true but I am just giving a heads-up.

horizontal rule
18

Saatanan Perkele!

But I'm still not getting 14.

horizontal rule
19

I have a viscerally negative reaction to the father in Family Guy. If the show were about the baby and the dog, no problem, but as long as the dad (or the older son) is around I just want to put my foot through the TV. I am neutral on the mom and the daughter.

This hatred has poisoned me such that American Dad fails utterly to interest me in any way.

I have had it explained that this somehow makes me less than human, but I am comfortable with that.

horizontal rule
20

I'm not a web guru, joeo, and I see the Amazon links, and the adbrite ads, and google analytics (which just keeps track of traffic), but I don't see anything pernicious. But don't take my word for it!

horizontal rule
21

joeo, does your friend work for the copyright enforcement division of a major media corporation?

horizontal rule
22

I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight and see if I find anything worry-worthy on it.

horizontal rule
23

There isn't anything on it. Why joeo's friend thinks a Google Analytics link is evidence of "probably some viruses no doubt" is beyond me, unless he's just trying to spread FUD.

horizontal rule
24

I have a viscerally negative reaction to the father in Family Guy I feel the same way about Fry. In fact, the only things worth a look in the whole pile are seasons 2-5 of the Simpsons.

The magic of those years of the show is that it takes repugnant characters and makes them appealing.

Much like the RNC.

horizontal rule
25

19 gets it exactly right.

horizontal rule
26

Lots of pirate sites are bombed. Look at it this way, he runs the risk of simply being forced to take his site down, versus the almost inevitable payoff in credit card numbers when he hooks a few dozen vulnerable machines.

Screw the DMCA, get virused or whatnot is the real risk of piracy.

I, of course, know this only through hearsay. And rumours and stuff.

The day the music died:Rollins joins Black Flag.

I thought that was the day Black Flag died. Then again, maybe that's what you're saying!

max
['You bet we've got something personal against you!']

horizontal rule
27

I'm not seeing it, max. The site is registered to a real guy who has his name and birthdate on a different site, and has used that name for other, unrelated activities. It could be an elaborate scam, but it doesn't look like one. Plus, according to the page I saw, he's 19, so this is just the kind of thing he might do.

But don't take my word for it!

horizontal rule
28

American Dad comprises all of the jokes that were cut from Family Guy because they weren't funny.

horizontal rule
29

28 is true, though Family Guy frequently consists of jokes that should have been cut for one reason or another

horizontal rule
30

Family Guy at least has the baby.

horizontal rule
31

The day the music was raised from the dead to conquer sin: the day Black Fag was formed.

horizontal rule
32

I never thought the baby was particularly funny.

horizontal rule
33

you can download any of these from Emule, and its been possible to do that for several years. as well as lots of old movies, pdf's of books, etc. Obviously i'm vigorously opposed to all this as it threatens our god-ordained capitalist system.

horizontal rule
34

Now that I'm home, I don't see anything worrisome in the source on the page, and having viewed the page with IE on a Windows laptop, then run Spybot Search & Destroy, I haven't seen any ill effects or indicators of real problems. The AdBrite stuff uses a cookie that's worth a second look (their security policy is neither the greatest nor the worst ever) but otherwise, no real problems found. That said, even though I use Firefox I still use Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster to block a lot of nastiness before it can happen, and I run a full scan of Spybot S&D every month or so for good measure. They, plus anti-virus - AVG Personal is great and free to use, as are Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster - are, of course, much-advised for anyone but especially if you routinely visit sites or download files of unknown or untrusted provenance.

horizontal rule
35

RMcMP: OS X, maybe?

horizontal rule
36

But don't take my word for it!

I wasn't plannin' on it. I don't have to bandwidth to bother, I don't watch TV, and I'm downloading Huge Files From MS at the moment anyways.

I'm just sayin': this guy I know says that three quarters of the sites that pop up like this have an obvious scam running and probably the rest were too subtle for me him to notice.

But if it isn't messin' with your machine, enjoy your FREE FREE FREE internet-delivered vegatating.

This season of American Dad has been much better than past seasons. I've been disappointed in Family Guy, though, because Peter has been getting way too much camera time.

horizontal rule
38

35: My personal preference is for OS X, and I use a Mac as my main machine at home, but I am overall fairly OS-agnostic. I have a Mac desktop because I prefer to use OS X and a Windows laptop because it was super-cheap.

horizontal rule
39

Though, if you are bringing it up in terms of security, yes, OS X is infinitely safer than Windows. On the other hand, I think many OS X users have a false sense of security about ourselves. When the day finally comes that some enterprising and determined script kiddie produces an exploit and it starts being used in the wild, I think a lot of us are going to be fucked pretty hard.
