I'll assume you're Irish: in grade school, we had a new kid who was Irish and we tried to convince him that "sugar" was unacceptable, akin to "fuck." You'll be proud to know he only believed us for about five seconds.

Just tell these foreigners that we call it the world series because it's a foregone conclusion that the best north american team would beat any other in the world. That's what I do.

p.s., if you want to soften the blow, note that American ballclubs outclass all others in large part because they recruit away the most brilliant non-american players, much as the US economy does with talent in all fields.

But good north american teams sometimes lose to foreign teams in exhibition play (not the "best" teams, but it doesn't help the case). And then, to explain why the US didn't make the Olympics, you'd have to explain the pro/amateur thing. Then, if someone asks why then Roger Clemens was going to pitch in the Olympics, you have more explaining to do yet. It's not so easy...
