I'm surprised that the Bay of Trolls is so small, but I love how Usenet is this Bermuda Triangle-esque chunk of ocean.

Already bookmarked. Why hasn't one of the professional pedants here come down on the spelling of "Blogipeligo"?

Just because I think I'm missing a joke: Sulawesi is a real place in Indonesia or thereabouts, isn't it? Is there something funny about the spelling, or what's it doing there?

9: I'm not sure either. Maybe the artist drew the island, then realized it looked remarkably similar to Sulawesi? It is a distinctive and funnily-shaped place.

Pwned. But I realized that the doodler did way too good a rendering of Sulawesi for it to be an accident.

The main thing the island is famous for is great coffee, which makes no sense as a connection. Maybe it's a reference to the island's former name of Celebes (= "Celebs" in Blogipeligo? Eh?)?

7, 10: I assumed that was the outline of a formerly existing but now submerged Usenet. Like Atlantis.

The small points on there are big fun - "Numa" and "Your Base" over on the east side, "the wreckage of the SS Howard Dean" over near the Blogipelago. Also, the "Cory Doctorow's balloon" joke is explained here.

It is indeed an excellent outline of Sulawesi, and I should know, because I have to draw a map of it (in relation to Borneo, and PNG, and Bali, and Australia) every time someone asks me what I do.

Speaking of places to go on the intertubes - I can't get on to Pharyngula; it hangs at "reading m1.2mdn.net". Is this an all round problem or does scienceblogs just hate me because I'm beautiful?

When that sort of thing happens to me, I usually fix it by putting the offending url onto my adblock list. Bloggers are adding more doodads, widgets, and moneymakers than I want to deal with or wait for.

I do research on some languages in Sulawesi. And it's just like Sir John Mandeville said:

In one of these isles be folk of great stature, as giants. And they be hideous for to look upon. And they have but one eye, and that is in the middle of the front. And they eat nothing but raw flesh and raw fish.

And in another isle be folk that have horses' feet. And they be strong and mighty, and swift runners; for they take wild beasts with running, and eat them.

And in another isle be folk that go always upon their knees full marvellously. And at every pace that they go, it seemeth that they would fall. And they have in every foot eight toes.

Are you under a geas, Nakku? Did a bad fairy turn up at your baby shower and say, "S/he(?) shall prick her finger on a spindle and then every time anybody asks her what she does she will have to draw a sketch map of a large island in the Indian Ocean, until a handsome geographer shall come to her and give her Google maps"?

I just asked because I know of several classicists in the general area pf Sulawesi. You would have been the fourth.

Classicists, like native Mexican hill tribesmen, must migrate long distances to get any work at all.
