A couple of days ago, one male lifeguard said to another male lifeguard, "So-and-so said there's a hot new guard." You know what the other one said? That's right, gswift. This is not a compliment.

What's hilarious is that the first lifeguard kept asking, and finally the second one said, "Oh yeah, there's this new girl who looks like Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings, but hotter."

I normally stay out of these discussions, but I just had to say, "Wait a minute, for a minute you didn't know what he was talking about and then you remember that there's a new guard who's hotter than Liv Tyler?"

Fifty-something-guy noted that when the topic was hotness, this guy could only think of himself. Funny, because true.

Surely there must be people out there rocking. I mean, these dudes are Finnish, but that still counts? Not to mention these guys.

I rocked tonight. We played a show in Harrisonburg. Apropos to your Liv Tyler discussion, the headliner covered an Aerosmith. Then, during Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls", this girl was rocking out, and I tried to explain to her—her being the same person who ten minutes before opined that going to the beach was gay—that perhaps another descriptor was in order.

Oh, and sometimes we play "Tequila Makes Her Close Fall Off," which I play completely tongue-in-cheek, so you can see how that rocks. Clearly, you're just getting old, ogged.

I had difficulty recently finding a band that rocked musically but didn't have a singer who sounds like a whining ponce. All the masculine-sounding rock vocalists are funneled into the "alt-country" movement and record nothing but derivative yawnfests (Ryan Adams, Jackie Greene), while bands with completely un-rock-like singers are free to rock as hard as they want (Coheed and Cambria being the ne plus ultra here, and in different ways the Thermals, the Killers and the Hold Steady).

How about My Morning Jacket? Check out their live album.

Man, without even leaving my bed I can see Hot Snakes, McLusky, Shellac, The Ponys, Marnie Stern, Ladyhawk and Ted Leo. Even random indie bands come out with some great rock-in-a-traditional-sense songs. This is even assuming that we're excluding noise rock (I'm bending this rule with Shellac), drum-based madness, and hardcore from consideration.

Also, the first two Strokes albums were basically nothing but Rock.

Ogged, you're hopeless.

This story is pretty amazing. I hope that someone really talented will write an awesome and gripping book about all this ten years from now. (But who? Tom Wolfe could have done it before he got old and Republican. Ron Rosenbaum, ditto.) Also, this kind of thing makes me hope that somewhere in Justice or the FBI or CIA or somewhere there is a mid-level functionary who can be the next, American, John LeCarre.
