Hmmmm. I always took the plan literally, and assumed we would target fertilizer companies. Perhaps I'm missing something.

That's what I said a few days ago. The last time people executed the BURN SHIT DOWN plan, my neighborhood went up in smoke. It's kind of hard to say "No! The white people's stuff! I mean... the other white people's stuff!"

I worried considerably about this a few years back when the Kings were in the West Coast Finals. Where would we riot and overturn cars? Which park would we all flock to, in estatic revelry that turned dangerous as the sun went down?

My forethought was never resolved, and sadly not needed.

6: After one of the mid-90s Bulls championships, a bunch of North Shore shitheads were arrested for having basically wilded their way down Michigan Ave., tearing up a Krochs and Brentanos, a Gap, etc. Mike Royko wrote an article naming their names, as surely would have been done if a bunch of Chicago kids had gone up and trashed downtown Winnetka, but ended up running a sort of rumination on this point instead, since he didn't think the names of anybody's children ought to printed in such circumstances.

I think that the Talking Heads lyrics were blazing a trail for the irony generation with their possibly-tongue-in-cheek-possibly-not, revolution song.

Tina Weymouth is the ex-sister-in-law of Lally Weymouth, a legendarily spoiled Washington Post heiress who screwed both George Will and Alexander Cockburn. I think that she was competing in some sort of fucked-up-heiress competition. Screwing avant-garde poets and junkies is so cliche.

66: From the AP wire today. Perhaps you can soothe your pops with the happy Obama talk:

"I don't really think the mayor wants to run. Does that mean the mayor would never run if he still views the system as failing?" said former Sen. David Boren, D-Okla., one of the meeting's organizers, after the event. "I think he's a good American, and I don't think he would close the door on it if he thought it was his duty."

The other leader of the summit, former Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., said the chances of a third-party bid have been dramatically altered by Democrat Barack Obama's victory in Iowa and his embrace of bipartisan unity, combined with other candidates' moves toward the center.

"It's changed the calculation anybody would make in terms of whether they were going to run," Nunn said after the forum.

All the lyrics on that album were largely written just to sound good with the music, except "This Must Be The Place". They sound pretty stupid when removed from the music, which makes me appreciate the first five R.E.M. albums for Stipe's ability to do that while creating lines that are poetic and memorable.

Not a spontaneous one, but I did a lot of planned protests with the campus AmnestyIntl and SolidarityForWorkers groups. Even went to the annual anti-School of the Americas protest, a couple years before South American leaders started getting elected who would actually cut ties with the SOA. It appeared like a completely pointless endeavor at the time.

Nothing that was seen as threatening by the cops, though. I wasn't at the one where the cops formed a circle around the people marching down a downtown street, ordered them to disperse, and then when they were unable to disperse threw them all in jail for the night. That convinced some of us college people that we were on the side of justice rather than just the side of Bob Marley fans.

How many have not? At the risk of making a ass out of you and me, I would guesstimate that at least half of the regulars (more, I would hope) hauled themselves to at least one demonstration to stop the war, even if Sgt. Slauggedter was for it.

I have a strong resume for my age group here: arrested in seven different civil disobedience actions, though none incurred too-serious risk of police violence. Picketed hotels, commercial buildings, universities, movie studios, Democratic Party conventions and grocers from Hawaii to Connecticut. Marched with anti-privateers in San Salvador, which was maybe not such a good idea at the time. Did on-camera spokespersoning during a police riot. Brought much-needed hand percussion instruments to anti-war rally.

John Sweeney before getting 350 people arrested in the streets of [University Town], in his nasal Queens brogue: "As poet John Donne might have said, 'Ask not for whom the bell tolls, [University] -- it tolls for thee!'"

Mary Anning, one of the first paleontologists, discoverer of the first Ichthyosaurus, the first nearly complete example of the Plesiosaurus; the first British Pterodactyl; the first Squaloraja.

Beatrix Potter, who discovered that lichen is a symbiotic lifeform composed of moss and fungi, and who founded the National Trust in the UK to keep the countryside she loved open to ordinary people and small farmers. (She also wrote and illustrated children's books on the revolutionary principle that they should be small enough for a child to carry, cheap enough for a child to afford, beautiful enough for anyone to remember for a lifetime, and interesting enough to keep anyone reading.)

I was going to second Lucy Stone until I realized I was thinking of Lucy Parsons, who did not keep her maiden name of Gonzalez. She was a Haymarket agitator (local hero, Di!) who, after being banned from the city of Chicago, gave a speech from a boat on the Chicago River to a crowd on the shore.

that's why I only referred to the first five albums.

What about EPs?

I mean:

Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself,
don't get caught.
Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself,
let others out
Wilder lower wolves.
Here's a house to put wolves out the door.
In a corner garden, wilder lower wolves.
House in order, house in order, house in order,
house in order.
Down there they're rounding a posse to ride.

what the hell's that supposed to mean? You're probably right that the songs on the first five records have a more conventional structure, but even those are fairly surreal. Not that I'm knocking them--I love those records, but I wouldn't try to make a stand on the notion of REM's lyrics being more poetic or less silly than the songs of most of their peers at the time.

I don't mind, though. Song lyrics are meant to carry the music, not be especially profound or meaningful.

Or there's Lucy Stone, who refused to change her name when she married (and, I think, also refused to "obey").

She and her husband Henry Blackwell wrote out and signed a statement protesting the current state of marital law, which the minister read at their wedding ceremony (in 1855, I believe). They moved in abolitionist-female suffrage circles, of course.

The problem with the "women worthies" name-some-famous-women approach is that it strips away all of this context and presents these women as solitary travellers...alone of all her sex, Woman A did this or that (which raises the question, without that context, I mean, Well, what the hell was the matter with Women B to Z that they didn't do likewise?).

I know the contest is over, but Marion Mahony Griffin was arguably the most talented Prairie School architect (after Frank Lloyd Wright) and in fact was responsible for some of "his" most famous renderings. The sewing machine had three American inventors. The first guy got nothing, Elias Howe got bought off, and Isaac M (not-Bashevis) Singer ended up with most of the loot.

Singer's partner Edmond Clark is the source of Martin Peretz's money, through Peretz's wife. He also built the Dakota Hotel where John Lennon was killed. There are no coincidences.

Isadora had the flashier life and death, but the real grandmother of modern dance is Martha Graham. Mother-Martha anecdotes are passed down through dance teachers in much the same way as are anecdotes about Lawrence Olivier in the theater world. From the ones I've heard, she must have been a thoroughly terrifying presence. One of the male dancers in her earlier companies once remarked that it was perhaps the only venue where men actively felt vagina-envy (a lot of her technical vocabulary is rather explicit).

I don't think that New Labor had any equivalent of the Movement Republicans working to drive the voters into the Democratic net.

I've voted for Democratic Presidential candidates less than half the time in my life, perhaps a third, and I did vote for Nader in 2000, but by 2002-2003 had come to believe that historical circumstances were not conducive to protest voting and third parties.

What's at stake in the primaries isn't so much who I vote for in the general, but how optimistic about the future I end up feeling. (The arrow is currently at Not Very Optimistic At All). And whether I take up my Canadian brother on his offer of asylum. (Granted that once the Northwest Passage and the arctic and Great Lakes water supplies become contentious issues, Canadians will be under the gun too.)

Give me a few famous, dead women. Rory needs to do a report on someone famous and dead and since all the initial options that she came up with were men, we wanted to at least think of a few women too to choose among. We came up with the obvious -- Susan B. Anthony, Sakajawea, Amelia Earhart.

It is impressive that the "obvious" famous dead women are all American, and that the death of, for example, Benazir Bhutto seems to have passed the questioner by without creating so much as a ripple. To be fair, the existence of women who are a) famous b) dead and c) not American seems to be fairly well known among other commenters.

This site looks good as resource, the only thing missing is a section on shrillness:

You're going to be no help at all when the pushing starts, are you? Maybe you could just drop shit out of a window or something.

I realize the thread has moved on, but this is an easy question . . .

Wal-Mart, Wall Street, Blackwater, Halliburton, and oil companies.

How many people here have even participated in a demonstration?

I got arrested for CD for the first time when I was 14. With my mom!

Microsoft! I forgot Microsoft!

(M-fing IE7 is drivng me out of my mind. Yeah, I know I can go back to 6, but 7 came installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to deal with it to build character or something. I'm now learning how to do regedit hacks -- which half of Unfogged has been doing since age 4, I'm sure -- to change some of the stupider things about the fucking *non-customizable* toolbars.)

Wal-Mart, Wall Street, Blackwater, Halliburton, and oil companies.

So basically we destroy Farmington? (Except for Wall Street, of course, and probably Blackwater, which as far as I know doesn't have an office there.)

Only been to a couple of protests. I have been in a bona fide riot [a concert hall got trashed after a gig]*, and also pitched street battle [groups of us jumped by bunch of bastard football casuals].

* amusingly, the place got totally wrecked, mostly because the bouncers were being arseholes. Then everyone filed out, in a fairly orderly fashion to find 100 or so cops in riot gear outside. The cops watched bemused as everyone quietly wandered off to catch a pint before the pubs shut, or get a late train.

No, but new programs have become a chore. I've got so many keyboard shortcuts & etc. in my head and in muscle memory that I'd rather not learn new ones unless I have to.

I've used Firefox, and I honestly don't find it much better than IE other than the toolbar issue. (Also, tabbed browsing? Blech. Turning that off is the first thing I do.) But maybe I'll give it another shot.

Tabbed browsing is probably the thing that has most improved my browsing experience in the last 10 years. Anti-popup software is great too, but I had learned to ignore with the popups and just delete them at the end of my session.

Maybe, but I use Alt+Tab constantly anyway, because I'm switching between browser, e-mail, various docs in Word and/or Excel, so it's much easier to use it for everything. And getting to and back from Ctrl+Tab to QWERTY position is slower for me. For hunt-and-peck types, I'm sure it would be different.

Not if you do what I did and remap Caps Lock to Ctrl. Plus, it'll save your left pinky from getting strained.

Houses will be cheap in Farmington once all those businesses close down. You have to buy them before they stand vacant too long, though, since the remaining HS boys will uses them for keggers, target practice, firewood, etc.

Tabbed browsing question (Mac division). Despite tabbed browsing, I inevitably end up with more than one browser window open. Is there a keyboard shortcut to move between windows within a program? On PC, Alt+Tab works for all open windows, but on Mac, it just goes between programs.

237: vim is a somewhat improved version of `vi', a moded editor. The vi-vs-emacs argument predates the mac-vs-peecee one, and is equivalently inane for the most part.

I think that when you are BURNING SHIT DOWN you need to have your Caps Lock set to its original mapping or the effect will be much less effective. Also you can use alt-tab to move easily between various piles of shit that you are planning to burn down.
