Speaking of tabla, I saw Trilok Gurtu, years ago playing as part of a percussion concert in Glasgow.* The music wasn't brilliant -- bit too fusiony for my taste -- but tabla is such a joyous thing to watch, especially when they start with the vocalisation.

I wonder if the problem is the exclamation points in the Blue Cranes file. I'm reuploading the zip with a renamed, bangless file. But I don't think that should be a problem on macs. I think the problem lies with you.

Yeah, his playing was awesome. I'm just not a huge fan of that type of fusiony music. Ditto, say, most post-1970 McLaughlin. As a player, he's a genius, but as music ... meh.

My first tries at toying with Genius resulted in me saying to Rah, "So here's what the 'genius' button does: it takes whatever you've selected and it pairs it with disc 2 of the Led Zeppelin box set." Things were much better the next day, though, and some of the results have surprised me.

A few weeks ago I made a fairly random mix of mostly pop revolving around bad weather and clairvoyance for the game I run when I did a prequel session set during a historical hurricane.

Pretty cool. Most impressive is the speed with which it compiles.

Also, this should be a good way of generating contenders for playlists, esp. like my bike riding mixes, for which I might have a few songs come right to mind, but then fade out a bit. I really like the idea of iTunes looking at my 3000 songs to find the ones I can't think of.

OTOH, they really need to let you pick more than one song at a time - OK, what songs go with "Sure Shot" and "Manic Depression"?

Last: I do wish it used the Pandora technology - I feel as if that would be a better path to new music; probably a wash for looking into my existing collection.

FWIW: The Villadangos and the second Ivanovic track feature some nice 'modern' classic techniques [percussion on the body, scrapes, fake 'snare' sounds, etc]. No overdubs -- just a single guitar.

Yeah, he's a brilliant player. Reading some of the stuff he's written -- he used to write for a magazine and has some stuff on his website too -- pointed me to a load of music that I wasn't that familiar with. Various things that live on that odd and often forgotten interface between western swing, rockabilly, traditional country and jazz.

Also, it sure took an awful lot of work to get iTunes Genius to work for me. It kept giving me an error while sending my info. After about a billion tries and then some googling, I ran my iTunes Library database through an XML validator, which told me that somewhere (but no indication where) three of the 30,000 songs in my library had non-UTF-8 characters in the genre field (all three were tracks from a couple of W-lfs-n's mixes, btw, if anybody else is having the same problem).

Genius is an interesting toy, but huge chunks of my library are albums that have been out of print for decades, and it doesn't know what to make of most of those.

I liked several of the tracks, but, probably a personal idiosyncracy but some of the sax playing on the tracks seemed to feature that sort of dry querulous tone that a lot of modern(ish) post-bop players use -- Charlie Parker too, for that matter* -- and that tone grates (for me). I have friends that love that sound, but it doesn't do much for me personally.

I liked the Aram Shelton track a lot.

apo - Validator is what I used when I had the same problem and it showed what line of the Library XML file had the bad characters.

I used Validator too, but your line numbers mean nothing to me. I sorted by genre and they weren't too hard to find then.

When I tried to download morejazz.zip the file transfer dropped about halfway through (the first try got to 69,312,040 bytes). Since the index to a .zip file is at the end of the file, an unzip utility is unable to read the truncated file. I'll bet the same thing happened to you, AWB, why don't you see how big the file you ended up with is? Also if you've got a PC, download a copy of gnu unzip. It unzips .zip files containing files with all kind of irregulationary characters in their names where other PC-based .zip utilities fail.

I've had this problem attempting to download your mixes before. I am sure they are so brilliant that I would be vastly spiritually enlightened if I could only successfully download them. But alas no. Wait! Here's morejazz2.zip (same file, second try, renamed at my end) at 130,794,846 bytes, and I can read the .zip index, which means that I've got the whole thing! Sayonara samsara, free at last!

or something like that to compress the .wavs to .mp3s. I had to do this to play some .oggs on my ipod clone, which doesn't understand .ogg format.

Actually, blortch, you shouldn't do what W. Kiernan recommends, because the transcoded results will sound awful. There is an ogg plugin for itunes, though.

You know, FLAC files come with much easier-to-use plugins for PC users who don't have iTunes. Just sayin'.
