Re: Abner, meet Binky

Can someone suggest a good source of reliable (but not overly technical) information on the oil spill(s)? I'd like to know something about what the hell is going on (even though I'm probably better off not knowing, since we're all utterly powerless to do anything about it anyway).

Cute names will help. Names appropriate to kittens, perhaps. Fluffy? Snowflake? Because if there isn't something going on soon that's more like a kitten than an unstoppable oil spill, I'm taking to my bed for the long term.

In other news what's making it all more unbearable is that one reads such wildly varying accounts and does not know what to (helplessly) believe. Truly: NY1 had some brief item about how it was going to be largely contained by today. Um?

On the plus side, at least the BP plan for protecting walruses worked!

FTA: The plan lists cold-water marine mammals including walruses, sea otters, sea lions and seals as "sensitive biological resources."

Other animals not harmed by this spill include buffalo, ferrets, and ankylosauruses.

I echo Mary Cath's sentiments. I lost track of spill coverage when BP announced that they had finally succeeded in something, that being the attempt to vastly increase the size of the spill by cleaning the gunk off the inside of the pipe and then cutting a bigger hole with giant shears.

Other animals not harmed by this spill include.... ankylosauruses.

Not so sure about that, given that oil is basically dead anklosaurus goo. Kind of disrespectful to be smearing their remains all over the gulf, no?

This blog from the Houston Chronicle has been covering it pretty closely, with a focus more on the economic and political fallout than the environmental effects.

In the fine tradition of naming housing developments after the plants and animals plowed under for the new homes (Fox Ridge?), I say go with "Pelican Downs" and "Turtle Manor".
