What's really messed up about my reaction to this story is that I'm vaguely cheered to see that he appears to be grossly okay. Look, we didn't treat him badly enough that he's forever unable to function!
And then I think about that reaction, and feel ill.
He's not a wreck and he's actually pro-government. That's actually better than I would have anticipated.

It shows commendable political sophistication, and he's probably a good guy dead man walking, if he hates Karzai but hates the Taliban more; that implies that his views on government favour neither theocracy nor unbridled corruption.
I voted for the party of Gordon Brown to try to keep the Tories out. It doesn't mean I don't think Gordon Brown should in a just world be banged up in Spandau for the rest of his life.
