Re: It sounded like good news; I was immediately suspicious.

Via TPM, the White House has played it down, but at the same time did not deny it.

From the pool report:
"no announcements but soon. no confirmation of interim appointment. essentially, nothing new"

From the official statement: "Elizabeth Warren has been a stalwart voice for American consumers and families and she was the architect of the idea that became the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The President will have more to say about the agency and its mission soon."

A WaPo blog said Obama "strongly hinted" last Friday that Warren would be appointed.

Maybe I'm a Klein-drone, but I'm not sure it's the biggest deal in practical terms. If it buoys up the left wing a bit, that's good.

It was announced one day before classes started that she would not be teaching my Contracts class, but from the backstory about that decision that has filtered down to me, I would say it doesn't mean much one way or the other.

The good news would be that somebody somewhere in the Obama administration has figured out that their endless, gleeful hippie-punching isn't helping their electoral chances at all.

Hey, if you're hated by both sides (or better yet, disdained by both sides) you must be doing something right! It works for Chris Matthews and David Brooks, why wouldn't it win an election??????

The things I'm reading say that this wouldn't be a recess appointment, but something special that the CPFB-creating legislation created - she'd serve until a permanent director was appointed, but that doesn't have to happen at all.

@16: And you know who else decided to just not fill an awkward permanent appointment and leave the pro tempore appointee they really wanted in place? HITLER. (when von Hindenburg died in office, he thought the presidential election would be ticklish to win against a possible conservative/army/establishment candidate and so decided just to leave the office of president vacant.)

As you know Bob, Carl Schmitt and all that. State of exception. Rejoice, just rejoice! as Margaret Thatcher said.

Yves Smith

Elizabeth Warren to accept sidelined figurehead position without real staffing or rule-making power in order to act as shiny bauble to distract distracted through midterms.

"Base" cheers! "At least half a loaf is better than Sarah Palin! Obama loves us!"

I thought Elizabeth Warren was just another corporatist stooge. Why is it then bad that she accepts a figurehead position?
