Re: A perspicuous notation

These are so versatile! ROASTED SWEET POTATO can serve as COMET, GNOME HAT or DISEMBODIED TOE.

All of these are classified, as far as bidirectionality goes, as "other neutrals", which leads inexorably to the supposition that bidirectionality refers to character alignment.

I mean, in a D&D sort of way.

ோ is a single character because it's a single vowel that wraps around its consonant (which shows up where the dotted circle is).

௲ is just over-ornate.

No, really, it looks all fucked up now. Font changes? Firefox being screwy?

Any ideas what gcc is looking for when it fails to find "png.h" and pukes when I try to python easy_install matplotlib? Obviously, it's not finding a header file called png.h, but does anyone know what provides that header?

On my system there are multiple files called "png.h":

(a) /usr/include/libpng12/png.h
(b) /usr/include/xulrunner-1.9.2/png.h
(c) /usr/include/png.h [symlink to (a)]
(d) /usr/lib/plt/collects/plot/src/all/png.h

Presumably you want the file (and associated files) furnished by libpng.

Even if you don't use Linux, packages.debian.org or packages.ubuntu.com is a good way to figure out what you need to install to get a libfoo or bar.h.

Heehee. So: having stayed away from the M-P-Institut for the last 3 months or so out of shame, I decide to attend a lecture today at the German-American Institute about the role of universities in society ... and who should be sitting two rows in front of me but the director of said MPI, the one who invited me to HDberg in the first place. (And it's not like he didn't see me, since I, being that kind of gunner dork intellectually-engaged citizen, had to stand up and ask a question.)
How very Alanis Morissette.
(But, uh, other HD-lurker, I'd still appreciate you emailing me about picking up my stuff from the locker...)

(And yes, I recognize that the very idea that advisors &c. are paying any attention to my shortcomings, let alone fuming righteously over them such that hiding in shame would appropriate, is only a figment of my overwrought imagination. Nevertheless, it was like rain on your wedding day.)

I totes would have, but seeing that locker key every time I rooted around in my backpack for something started really getting to me, so I took it out about two months ago--and hence didn't have it on me today.

Kidding aside, where I really let The Mineshaft down today was an entirely different breaching-experiment opportunity: after the lecture, I heard the speaker asking his hosts whether they could make a detour before dinner for him to have a single malt--but the crowd of old fogeys, whoever they were, pleaded ignorance of any suitable venue. Clearly I ought to have taken charge right there: "I know just the place. Let us sip Scotch, and while we breathe in the peaty fumes of the Alte-, we can discuss your 'Neue Aufklärung.'
