Re: Syne You've Been Gone

1

Because New Year is short for New Year's Day, which is capitalized because it's a holiday.

They painted a two dollar bill and will sell it for $10. But wait, you get two. But shipping is expensive.

G'night, drinking wine, playing online boggle* and listening to Pandora. To match my usual maudlin New Year's mood just got Gary Jules's "Mad World" followed by "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". (I should make a specialized maudlin NYE station.) Worst song duo in the world to strip to. But while we were staking out a tree today where we saw a Pileated go into its nesthole we saw a red fox ford a stream, so am satisfied. Tomorrow for the local CBC maybe we can catch the Bald Eagle that patrols the Allegheny near us.

*Two other family members in the house were playing as well, so par-tay!

When I was in high school and would try to explain to people about trading posts and Navajo rugs and stuff people seemed to always mishear what I was saying in unhelpful ways.

Navajo rugs are very simple technologically, so it's likely that there are various other weaving traditions with which they might easily be confused. On googling, it seems that kilims are basically the same thing, so yeah.

Jesus, how do you stand it? I like to visit my mom, but she does lay in some good booze before I arrive. That makes the less pleasant things so much less less pleasant.

Isn't it odd how when you go to a bar filled mostly with people you like to see that the first hour or so is wonderful, then the next hour or so starts to sour a little and you start to wish you were back home? Then, if you stick that out, and have another drink, it actually becomes okay again, and even fun, but never quite as wonderful as it was at first? I dunno, but that's my experience; happy 2011, you imaginary friends.

we actually had a great new year's eve for a change! my brother, his gf, my sister, and husband x all went to jade at the Fullerton hotel, which is a great chinese restaurant serving food in small, western-style individual portions. everything was sooooooo good! I could have eaten about twenty more of the wasabi prawns which served as an amuse-bouche, and pretty much the same with all of them. there was a tiny sandwich of crispy roast suckling pork skin serving as "bread" and a cube of fois gras cooked with tiny shreds of candied lemon peel. free flow champagne, which I resented mildly as it was included in the price, and also because champagne is one of the very few drinks that looks attractive to me anymore. 1250 for the five of us, on me, kind of a splurge but fuck it. delicious food, the people I love most in the world, wonderful conversation, a chance to dress up and wear my miu miu platforms (they make me about 6 ft tall). NYE usually sucks, but this one was kick ass. Happy New Year y'all, and remember to eat rice and beans and greens for good luck in the new year!

My parents have a permanent supply of very nice booze, or at least wine. My dad also bought a good bottle of Armagnac for my visit. I've been doing my best to create space in the cellar. We've been opening a little over a bottle a night. NY eve involved very nice bordeaux, ok bordeaux, nice Alsatian riesling, and nice venison at friends of ours. Came back so stuffed I was unable to sleep. At least I did come back. My mom drove after partaking of all the wine. Zero visibility due to fog but only a few kilometers on empty roads. Tomorrow I'm off to Tignes for a week of skiing. Visiting the parents can be nice.

Also re nice stuff and all the meetups... I was wondering if any NYers would be interested in a foie gras centered meetup at my place in a couple weeks. You can get the stuff for a song in France after the holidays so I could bring a good chunk back.

And best wishes to everybody for 2011. May we survive it!

Had a pleasant if well behaved evening at some friends' place. One of them is Tamil, and the food was to die for. Also, they had German friends staying, so the feuerzangenbowle flowed like water. Determined to do nothing now until Tuesday.

Another pleasant but unexciting party here. I did spend most of it talking to Elena Kagan's brother, although not about her. (The conversation had been going on for awhile when he mentioned where his other brother taught. I, in a very uncool fashion, yelped: "Wait, Kagan... That means your sister is..." and he rolled his eyes and admitted it. Clearly he didn't want to spend his evening talking about her, so I dropped it.)

I spend the evening playing the board game Dominion online, with no alcohol of any sort, while putting off editing my friend's B-school application essays. (Yes, yes, insert low hanging fruit about me doing him a favor--but see D^2's "everything I really need to know I learned from my fabulously expensive B-school education.")

On the one hand, the evening was thoroughly depressing (although the game is fun!). On the other hand, given the alternatives--a local CouchSurfing.org thing with strangers, joining my recent ex for her plans--it was probably the least bad option.

And now I am eating chocolate chocolate-chip pancakes, with raspberries and maple syrup. Mmmm. So there, NYE.
