Re: FaceTime

How did you learn it? Did you commit unauthorized face touching?

1: Nope! It was reported to me by a trusted source, who was surprised to learn that she was alone among her small group of cow-orkers in the authorizing of face touching.

Weird.

Does this mean touching your partner's face with your hand? Or touching their face with your face? Or touching their face with your ass? The former two seem entirely innocuous.

You can't touch my face!

Because it's covered with hair. Okay, two tiny patches on the upper cheeks and the nose is not covered. Glasses cover the eyes. Forehead is covered.

4:Different for pardners. Dogs can lick my nose.

I like how you're incapable of not punning.

Not allowing face-touching sounds pretty weird to me.

Fist, yes. You'd be surprised how many people find this unacceptable.

Leaving aside slapping, even.

I've always been a little reluctant to face touch, because it seems condescending, for reasons I can't quite pinpoint. It reminds me of grandmothers grabbing chins and pinching cheeks, so slave purchasers checking teeth.

Still I've never encountered a rule against face touching, and will sometimes do it, because, after all, faces are beautiful, and nice to touch.

11: My grandmother is a cheek flicker, but only if you say something untoward. Unfortunately, I say a lot of untoward things, as far as Granny is concerned.

What if you hold your finger a quarter-inch from their face and go "I'm not touching yooouuu!"?

One sure way to get my dogs playfully barking is to touch the sides of their snouts with my fingers.

This is not cultural.

13. They bite the end off your finger and serve you right.

I must admit that a ban on face touching sounds strange to me. Serious constraint on kissing, inter alia.

Face-touching is John Travolta's signature move in Face/Off. It's how you know he's John Travolta and not that other guy.

I'm not that big a fan of kissing, preferring nuzzling.
I should probably spend less time with cats.

(Because both of them were such terrible actors.)

Oh, hi! Yeah, it's not just unauthorized face touching that's deprecated for some people, it's any face touching (in a caressive manner). I would find that difficult to get used to in a relationship, but I'm sure that if you really love the person, you'd learn: no touch the face! Okay.

Ogged is on record against it. I don't know what the reasoning, if any, was.

Er, the phrasing on question #23 sounds glib. But I was genuinely curious how you'd react to a situation like that, even though it's not really analogous to the romantic face touching being discussed. Anyway, never mind if that's a dumb question.

Better than duck fat on toast. The problem is, after the first lick, you can't stop.

[MLALA]608: Finished 'Broom of the System,' not feeling super positive about it.

Not done, but pretty far into it and I'm recalling my so-so reaction from before. Actually, I do like some of the shorter elements (tree toad lady etc.), but it does not really add up to that much. I have no idea what the structure of IJ is, but my experience is that DFW's real strength was in shorter forms.
