No Jesus in the Ithaca story, which they do indeed make a big deal about there.

If ice cream was banned on Sundays under local blue laws, it seems inapposite to respond by removing the soda and leaving "ice cream" in the name.

I notice Wikipedia cites only one book dated 2000 for this story, which isn't available online. I had thought the origins of the sundae were pretty murky, and suspect the book of exaggerating the story's acceptance.

This is resulting in some pretty enjoyable extracts from Google Books.

Judge Arnoux has decided the Sunday cases. In regard to the express companies he holds that as to inter State commerce they may conduct it on Sunday, any interference therewith by a State being in violation of the Federal Constitution; but as to domestic business they may not, except to deliver perishable articles. He holds that iron blast-furnaces may be operated on Sunday, from the intrinsic necessity of the case.
.... As to the ice-cream people, he holds that the manufacture of ice-cream on Sunday is forbidden, but that it is "food," and as such may be eaten on the premises where sold, but that it may not be delivered to customers outside on Sunday, and that confectionery may not be sold on Sunday. As we construe, this it would permit ice-cream saloons to be kept open on Sunday. This is undoubtedly right if ice-cream is "food," but we doubt that it is "food" within the intent of the law any more than confectionery is "food." Is frozen cream "food" any more than candied sugar, within the legislative intent?

Here's a long list of origin myths. The ones involving blue laws, contra Wikipedia, seem to be with laws about soda or ice cream sodas, not ice cream.

How many books dated to other years do they cite?

(AFAICT the "Sundae" article doesn't cite any books at all?)

(AFAICT the "Sundae" article doesn't cite any books at all?)

It's mentioned in the main body, not the footnotes.

Apparently, one of the reasons that they stopped delivering mail on Sunday was because small town post offices served alcohol and reformers wanted the post offices closed on Sunday.

Practically everybody I know with kids has missed at least a day of work during the past two weeks to deal with stomach bugs.

Jammies just left with Hawaiian Punch for the ER. After two days of throwing up, she developed diarrhea. I'll feel much better as soon as she's on an IV.

Apparently ear infections can cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. She wasn't even particularly sneezy or snotty, at least not for a toddler. Ugh, she must have been in a lot of pain.

I think the doc just put her on antibiotics and motrin, but not drops. I was texting Jammies and telling him to make them put drops in her ears to help relieve the pressure, but I don't know if that will happen.

Is HP swimming yet? I ask only because my mom had us in the water at a crazy early age (as in, I crawled off the diving board—probably illegal or whatever at this point), and my brother had a lot of ear infections, which led to him having to have tubes put in. Actually, I don't even know if they still do the tubes thing.

Uh, not to worry you any further. Just thinking out loud. (And the brother turned out fine, except for keeping a pet scorpion, which is weird.)

We've had lots of ear infections. It super sucks. Cutting way down on dairy and sugar seemed to help a lot but who knows if that just coincided with the kid getting better for some other reason. Good luck.

If I understand the Repub position we need to go back to the past when we won the future against Sputnik, but with everything privatized this time. And therefore better

Totally stupid liberal guilt kicking in: I just got a call that Hokey Pokey got into the state university fancy pants daycare. This means also that Hawaiian Punch gets priority for getting in. This place has amazing opportunities and ridiculous SWPL nonsense as well. Anyway I feel guilty for yanking them out of perfectly reasonable daycare.

I think by the time they're 3 and 4, the current daycare will really be not-so-great, but it's totally fine for now. The people are nice. Aside from the "piggy" incident. Anyway, I feel like I'm complicit in white flight or something.
