Re: Knowledge

I would guess that it's not as common a cause as November is.

Traditionally, death is regarded as a chronic condition.

Not sure what aortic dissection is; is it a euphemism for throat slitting?

What's aortic dissection?

3: I don't know turkey anatomy very well, but that wouldn't be a very accurate euphemism in people.

I suppose it could be a euphemism for throat slitting (although the aorta doesn't get up that far, does it?) but IIRC it means 'the wall of your aorta just spontaneously came apart. Sucks to be you.'

Don't people with Marfan's syndrome get that?

I think they do -- Marfan's includes screwed-up connective tissue, which would include blood vessel walls. I think. From my vast knowledge of anatomy and medicine.

Christmasitis?

If a turkey dies of aortic dissection, I think a vegan can go ahead and eat it.

I should note that most major vegan organizations do not consider me an authority on the practice of veganism. I just figured that many vegetarians seems to have health reasons for not eating meat whereas the vegans seemed more to be the people with ethical reasons for not eating meat. Since the bird died of natural causes, the vegans would seem more likely to be free to chow down.

I think vegans generally get cranky about being confused with scavengers.

Not sure I'd avise eating something that had just dropped down dead - might have psittacosis or rabies or something. And its Yersinia bearing fleas will all be looing for a new apartment.

Aortic dissection is also a common cause of death in humans (although not as common as it is for turkeys, I'm guessing) . LB has it right--the lining of the aorta tears and eventually blows out, typically in the upper chest, and then you die as all of the blood leaving your heart stops going where it should. The primary cause for aortic dissection in humans is smoking. I hope that's not true for turkeys, or Butterball has some splaining to do.

Apparently one of the causes in turkeys is excess consumption of legumes.

But people love eating a turkey that's smoked!

Well that there is incentive to stay quit. I handled a case once that involved a kid (20-something?) who died of an aortic dissection. Horrible, and pretty damn hard to fix unless you catch it really quickly.

From PubMed: "Aortic dissection occurs in approximately 2 out of every 10,000 people. It can affect anyone, but is most often seen in men aged 40 to 70."

I don't think I'll worry about this one.

To the OP, it's time for you to start learning songs about veterinarians (a really nice performance; better than the album version, imo).
