Note about the continued digitization of information: I have a photocopy of that sitting in a box that I haven't looked at in years. I remember looking for it online a while back, probably 5-6 years ago, and not finding it. Now there are multiple copies on the web.

I would probably be well served to get rid of some of the things I hold onto just in case I might want to read them again, and figure that they will probably be available online by the next time I think of them (and that, if they aren't, the odds of me bothering to sort through old boxes to find something are low), but I don't think I'm emotionally prepared to do that yet.

Great, and I hope it's doubly or trebly great for people who actually compose - I know exactly who I'll be sharing this with once her FB page gets a little less grim.

Nick if you want to email me . . .

I was responding to this comment. I deliberately didn't bother including a link because it seemed like such a thin joke that it wasn't worth explaining.

There was a moment when I thought I should get rid of a bunch journal articles like that. Then I changed jobs and lost Jstore access. Now I'm glad I hung on to the articles.

I would have just forwarded the email if I hadn't thought the link plus message was charming on its own merit.

I'm not always super confident that things will stay findable on the web forever, so I'd be more likely to grab the image and save it on my computer, and then throw the paper copy away. I've also been gradually getting rid of other paper artifacts, mostly notes and class materials, after running them through a scanning photocopier in giant stacks. Entire file drawers now live in a little folder on my hard drive.

I was hoping you would post it, I'm glad you found it charming, and I'm glad to benefit from your general lenience towards guest content.

I think I was in a mood to appreciate a certain sort of humor on Saturday morning. In addition to thinking that link was worth passing along, I was quite amused by the combination of images and song in this video.

Side note / public service announcement: If anybody wants a good way to spend .99, I recommend this song. Clearly the best track off an album which is only available on CD as an expensive import. I love Dave Goulder as a songwriter, and that is one of the best interpretations I've heard of one of his songs.

Since we've decided to have another thread about me, I'm going to plug my book of short stories, available here. They're only a dollar and they're awesome, like me.

I've also got a story coming out in the next issue of this journal.

The OP was great. The "tacet" instruction reminded me: in high school concert band, we in the percussion section section always used to make a huge pretend deal whenever we received a piece of music with a section labeled "tacet" (not an infrequent occurrence for drum parts). We'd talk for weeks about polishing the tacet and tuning the tacet. We'd make references to having to attend several extra tacet rehearsals after school in order to prepare, and we'd critique each other's progress on the tacet.

It was all very bandgeek, and we amused ourselves immensely.

I love this idea, but every scanning photocopier I've ever used has required far too much attention to make this sound worthwhile. Also there used to be a sleepy little council office outpost that I would occasionally use for scans, but it changed hands in redistricting.

Do you people ever go back and read these threads and wonder why you took the effort?

That's a pretty song.

Thank you.

I really think it is excellent, and I don't use that word lightly -- the performance combines technical skill and emotional sensitivity in way that's unusual. So I'll be somewhat disappointing if text is the only person I can talk into listening to it.

Also, I remember looking up the lyrics and being pleased to find this note along with them.

Could I perhaps add to this correspondence, by mentioning that Dave did me the extraordinary honour of actually writing this song for me, in (if my memory serves me correctly) 1970. I should sing it more often. I was living in Whitley Bay at the time and I remember well receiving his letter which contained the words, "Your song is ready - when can you come and collect?". At that time, Dave was living in Glen Cottage, Glen Torridon, Wester Ross, where he was running a climbers' hostel. . . .

It makes me happy that the internet facilitates making private memories/associations like that public.
