Also, you shouldn't underestimate the degree to which media loathing/mockery directly generates support in the right. It's a response to perceived injustice. Hence the continuing affection for Dan Quayle, who surely should be seen *by the right* as a not-ready-for-primetime player. Similarly, republicans fawned on by the press (like John McCain) are seen by the right as suspect.
