Always interesting to see how documents like this become public-- Syria's version of Wikileaks:


Bakr's documents were long hidden in a tiny addition to a house in embattled northern Syria. Reports of their existence were first made by an eyewitness who had seen them in Haji Bakr's house shortly after his death.

The guy was apparently killed basically by accident.

They portray an organization that, while seemingly driven by religious fanaticism, is actually coldly calculating.

Are these two things really that distinct? The "seems x, but is actually y? phrasing is strange because, at least in my experience, x and y tend to go together more often than not.
