I think football is a sport that is dangerous to its participants. The risk of damage from concussion is so high that I will only watch people who play for free. That way I know they really wanted to play and aren't being unduly influenced by money brought into the picture by fans.

I'd love to see Cam Newton do the bit in 4.

I was entertained. Denver basically reprising the Baltimore Ravens early 2000s Super Bowl run with Peyton Manning playing the part of Trent Dilfer. Carolina just being flat out better than other teams. So far.

As a self-hating Eagles fan, I have to say this post-season didn't really work out in terms of teaching Eagles fans valuable life lessons the way I hoped. Andy Reid is a great coach who is fucking terrible at clock management. Eagles fans are chuckleheads who think that there's no such thing as luck, and every season they don't win the Super Bowl is a total failure, and who hate all of their stars. So of course they hate Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid. When KC made the playoffs and the Eagles missed, I thought this would be a valuable opportunity for them to learn to appreciate it when they have players and coaches who are good, even if they aren't perfect. But then KC, despite winning their first playoff game in 20 years, lost because of bad clock management, and now they're back to "See, Andy Reid sucks. That's why the Eagles only went 10-10 in playoff games." That means you got to see the Eagles in 20 playoff games, you moron!

I'm a Patriots fan. Watching this season has been discouraging. Given the way they have played (and yes, there are reasons), I am glad they didn't make it to the Super Bowl. It would have been embarrassing. Maybe not as embarrassing as Super Bowl XX, but not good. (Good lord, that was THIRTY YEARS AGO!!!)

Go Panthers!

I don't claim to be an analytical football fan or to have a deep knowledge of the (most complicated of the major sports) game, but I don't understand why every team hasn't been using the same strategy Denver did yesterday against the Patriots for years, at least in the years since it's been clear that they have a far from elite O line. Pressure Brady constantly, but don't blitz so you command the short or mid range routes and cut off that weapon. Double or triple team Gronk. It seems so obvious! Why not do this all the time? I know Denver has an elite defense but it doesn't seem that hard to implement the same strategy with mild variations and beat the Patriots most of the time, as the Broncos just did with a barely functioning QB.

Talk about sports?

The firing of David Blatt is a fascinating story.

While the Cavs suffered a monumental loss to the Warriors in a primetime matchup in Cleveland, it's hard to argue with Blatt's overall results, even in a weaker conference. According to some reports, it was the internal team politics that were more to blame for the firing than anything related to basketball. While the Internet had a field day with the firing, Rick Carlisle, Stan Van Gundy and others, were nowhere near as joyful.

But how do you pressure Brady without blitzing? It worked for Denver because they have the best defense in the league.

The Pats O-line is bad enough and has been bad enough for a while that it feels like a league-average or above defense should be able to pressure him. But again I don't claim to even fake-know football strategy in the way I do NBA or MLB.

12: Denver has the best defense in the league, and yet that strategy only barely worked for Denver, thanks mostly to an extremely rare fluke missed extra point by Gostkowski.

Yes but most other teams play with a QB that can throw the ball.

Andy Reid's clock management is puzzling, but it's hard to call thst the reason they lost, given they were behind by 14. It's very different than blowing a lead by failing to run down the clock enough.

First we strip it's planet status and now you want to unname it? Poor lil' planetoid. Doesn't this discovery suggest there are probably a lot of very large planets in distant solar orbits? We're going to need a bigger mnemonic anyways..

I doubt a chest plate would be of much use in that regard. I think the crocs just grab your legs as you walk by the water or arms if you reach in to fill a canteen. The iron would just help drown you.

Wait. Why did Blatt get fired?

Nobody knows, but I'm inclined to agree with this.

Putting it all together, it is hard to accept any non-LBJ explanation for Blatt's firing. The ESPN piece is detailed in its reasons but they really are mostly small details when the larger story was that James didn't really did not want Blatt as a coach for much of last season. Moreover, the fact that James has been publicly quiet this year does not mean he has been quiet behind the scenes (in fact, you could infer that his quiet public stance is cover for backroom discussions).
