Re: Auto-immunity

I haven't looked up the science on this, but I'm pretty sure it's possible to have a doubly-shitty immune system that both attacks your own organs and isn't very good at fighting disease.

Well, yeah. That's why I said that Person B is an example of the phenomenon, and not that that the phenomenon is universal.

1: Probably more fun though to think of your immune system as Superman instead of Lenny.

I think the bit that handles response to micropathogens is different from the bit that goes wrong and gives you auto immune diseases.

7: I don't know, but certainly treatment for autoimmune diseases is often just dampening down the whole immune system. It's why they check you for TB and such before given the meds.

This depressingly confirms that my hypochondriac mother will continue in shitty health forever and ever and ever, as I have long suspected.

I don't know. My friend that was eventually diagnosed with lupus was constantly having infections and was on antibiotics almost continually

Didn't young adults die disproportionately in the 1918 flu because their robust immune systems drowned them in mucus? I'm shooting for a B+ immune system, that seems like the sweet spot.

Sometimes I just have to crop up days late to register my feelings about epidemiology lest they go unregistered. Hi, I hope everyone is great.

Because of grade inflation, a current B+ immune system would have been a D- one in 1918.

I meant B+ in 1918 cytokine-dollars

Hi! The bird flu too. Your best bet if the bird flu gets big is to go on chemo or find other ways to destroy your immune system.

In health related news, I finally got braces and oh my god do they hurt like a bitch. Like everything else dental-related, it's apparently way worse if you do it as an adult. It's day 4 and they should be getting better now, but I haven't been able to eat anything solid since they got put on.

On day two the pain was awful, I couldn't really eat, and I had to fly on a delayed flight with a dozen toddlers. One of the ones right behind me decided to tantrum for an hour straight. No real point to this story, except to share tales of minor misery.

Who would have thought that using bits of metal to pull on your teeth with sufficient force to move them out of place would hurt?

Somebody was once complaining to me about how much pain it was to get a vasectomy. So I guess there's a hidden downside to getting stabbed in the balls too.

You should considered a second career writing 'get well soon' card messages.

I would put can't eat pain coupled with an hour in coach by a tantrum firmly in the intermediate rather than minor suffering category. May your sufferings soon be mitigated.

Aw thanks for the photo!

I was feeling pretty sorry for myself in the moment, but on the whole scheme of things it was temporary and fairly first world problem-y (I have money for adult orthodontia! And flying!), so I didn't want to blow it out of proportion.
