Re: Oops, Indeed

That article contains a lot of identifying information. It surprises me that they took this story to the press.

I'm struck by the staggering incompetence of the state authorities. First, due to a "filing error," neither adoptive family was informed that their child had a twin sibling. Second, when they married (which must have required a state license?) nobody noticed that they had the same birth date and that each had been adopted?!

That can't be a real story -- *especially* with that last line.

Well, since this thread is already crashed and burned, I am going to hijack it before the customary 20 comments to say that I finally got my Mastodon instance up and reasonably stable and you people should join it so I'm not almost alone in there.

I got on Mastodon a week or two ago but didn't know who to follow and did nothing with it. A little tool that looks at your twitter follows and returns a list of the same handles on Mastodon would be pretty great.

Yeah, it would be nice to have tools to migrate. Although I think in the long run that Mastodon will have a very feel than Twitter, because of the role of the community on your local instance. Probably everyone will have a few different instances they belong to, and a different persona on each one.

Lord the UI needs some work, though.

On topic, there's an "Edible Arrangements" nearby where I am now. I keep wondering how they answer the phone without making people think they are saying "Oedipal Arrangements." I guess people who buy flower baskets made of fruit have very little aptitude for double entendre.

Sometimes when we touch,
the monozygosity's too much.
And I have to close my eyes and hide.
I want to hold you till I die,
Till we both break down and cry.
I want to hold you till our mom finds where we hides.

6. There was another attempted social network (I joined it at the time, but I can't remember the name) which died because after about a hundred people joined it essentially ground to a halt because it was massively underpowered, that is, it didn't have a server farm the size of a medium sized state to support it. Any reason why this won't happen here?

16: No, and it's happening already (in that some instances are refusing new members). OTOH, instances can be hosted by anyone, and AFAIK hosting costs are falling steeply over time, so it may be viable.

I don't think scaling will be a problem with Mastodon, because if the demand is there, people can spin up new instances. Scaling of individual instances may top out such that they close to new users, but there will always be other instances available to join.

If you click on someone's avatar you can see their toots, and there is a grey icon next to their avatar that you can click to follow them. It will turn blue if they are followed.

You can find people to follow by typing their names in the search box on the left. @Gargron@mastodon.social is a good one to follow. He's the lead developer of Mastodon.

I would like an answer to 15, if anyone has one.

Mastodon is not Twitter. It does some of the things that Twitter does, but it does other things that are different. These include things like 500 words per toot, the federation thing/decentralized governance structure, ability to be scaled for both large communities and small ones, and the emphasis on inclusion and anti-nazism.

There are some technology and design choices that make it likely that the platform will evolve in a different direction At this point, its still not clear what that direction is going to be, but its interesting to watch and participate in the process of getting there.

I'm on Spike's as well as mastodon.xyz, one of the large semi-generic (French-operated) ones, both under the same pseud, and if you look at my toots on .xyz you can find my oulipo.social pseud.

I keep meaning to also join witches.town, which opens up registrations for one hour every day (8PM CEST).

Yeah, it seems like having multiple identities across different servers is common. I'm on a couple other instances as well.

Mastodon.social is the big one that I've joined, although a Japanese one just got huge overnight, and is now even bigger. So the Mastodon.social federated timeline is really heavy on Japanese right now, which is a problem for me because I don't read Japanese. Auto-translate needs to be a thing.

SPOILER ALERT. MOVIE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS.

Regarding the OP, there's a great movie from 1996 that examines the question of how we should incorporate history into our daily lives. The radical answer: We shouldn't at all.

The movie cements that conclusion when the two lovers -- central, sympathetic characters in the movie -- discover that they are half-siblings. Their reaction is, "Meh." They basically have no reaction. It changes nothing.

As I say, it's deliberately radical, and I'd actually argue that the movie's point of view is misguided. But the movie is still great.

I'm not naming it because I've spoiled the big reveal, but that reveal is kind of incidental to the rest of the plot.

There's also that movie circa 1996, where the mom and son keep having sex. They already know they're related and it's Elliot from E.T. Don't watch this movie with your own parents.
