Re: The Big Sick

I enjoyed that movie a lot too.

One part I didn't like was his one-man show -- the jokes about it were lame, and it didn't fit his character -- he didn't seem to be obliviously stupid like that otherwise.

Also, did it make any sense that his family sent him down to the basement to pray alone. Why wouldn't his brother have to pray too? Maybe I missed the explanation. Or maybe I should have addressed to ask-a-muslim.

Yes. It made no sense to me either. Mercifully, it only got a few minutes.

Why wouldn't his brother have to pray too?

Also no idea. We might have fewer Muslims around here than black people.

No, we definitely have at least two.

One plus vestigial bits plus occasionally another, right?

5: I guess maybe I'm forgetting someone?

his one-man show

If he ain't Ricky Jay or Hal Holbrook or maybe that guy who recites Beowulf, then, as a rule, no.

7: The (lousy) joke is that it is, as your rule indicates, awful.

Yeah, the one-man seemed like a device from a bad sitcom. And his standup was surprisingly weak to be in a movie that was otherwise pretty funny.

I think the heroin bit was his real act from that time period:

It may have been intentional that his standup was good-not-great.

My guess about the praying is that single men don't pray with married men or women. Shouldn't everybody have been praying at the same time though? It seems like the rest of the family was just sitting at the table waiting for him.

9: It's entirely possible that the one-man and standup material that he used were actually drawn from that period in his life, while the script itself was written ten years later, after he had honed his technique. Just speculating.

I really liked this movie, but did have one complaint: it was too long. Some of the scenes could have been better edited (i.e., shortened), imo.

I already loved Kumail, but also thought Emily was great.

11: Yes, but the one-man show wasn't just bad, it was horrible and didn't fit his character. He gives no indication otherwise of being fascinated by Pakistan, or of being the kind of nerd that can't tell when he's boring people.
