I would have asked for that toy over Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots for sure.

The headline ("Hookworm, a disease of extreme poverty, is thriving in the US south. Why?") seems to miss the point of the article.

Did anyone see Rod Dreher's take on Coates' article?

Dreher is just breathtaking in his inability to read past his own derp, I know, but this particular response is vomit-worthy in its combination of smug piety and utter stupidity.

I'll wait for the Edroso version. Unfiltered Dreher is too much for my brain to handle. The derp burns.

White people read an essay and got a sad. Won't somebody give them a tax break?

I vaguely recall reading how the stereotypes of southern whites as lazy and stupid really crumbled after public health campaigns rolled back hookworm and yellow fever. Interesting, huh?

If you follow country music at all, you'd see how the new stereotype involves doing stupid things very quickly.

Rod: If racism explains everything, then what is there left to talk about?
This reminds me during the recent statue debate where defenders of the Confederacy said, "What's next, we're going to tear down statues of people like Columbus?" and the response was, "Keep going, you're almost there..."

11 - It really is impressively awful in exactly the way you describe. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go wash my eyes out with battery acid.
