This Adam Rippon phenomenon is interesting. The Olympics happens every 4 years and some thing advance a lot in that time. So we have a lot of people going "Wow! Look at this openly gay figure skater! So great" and we have a lot of people going "This is new? There weren't openly gay figure skaters before? Hasn't Johnny Weir been around forever?"

Maybe Rippon is a new breed, having grown up in a world where maybe there isn't a complete lack of prejudice, but almost everyone he encountered personally when growing up didn't have any prejudice and he had no reason to ever hide anything or feel oppressed. I read a story about filmmaker Ryan Trecartin that emphasized that, that he has to follow in the traditions of the queer icons he idolized, but doesn't have that much in common with them because he never felt stigmatized for being queer.

I looked it up. They both only got bronze medals. Maybe they should try heterosexuality, like Lipinski.

Yeah -- it's sort of related to how John Mahoney just died, and everyone was surprised to realize he wasn't officially out. Like, there's a nudge-nudge level of being openly known to be gay but still not being 'out' to the point of admitting it explicitly in public that seems to make less and less sense as there's more and more acceptance.

Liberace had all sorts of naive straight fans who thought he was just a flashy dresser, and maintaining some level of implausible deniability was necessary for his career. And the same, I guess, for Mahoney -- even in the 90s, network execs wouldn't have hired him to play a straight everyman if he'd been all the way out. And all the gay figure skaters in prior Olympics, sort of the same. I don't really have a coherent thought, but things keep changing.

I had no idea John Mahoney was even rumored to be gay, but, in my defense, I hadn't followed his career since Striking Distance.

Oh, I remember people noting back when the show was on that it was amusingly anti-stereotypical that of Frasier, Niles, and Martin, the only one played by a gay actor was Martin. But even back then, I don't recall it being discussed as 'rumored to be gay' -- his sexuality was mentioned as an uncontroversial fact. He just wasn't quite out enough that his obituaries weren't cagy about it.

I guess I don't recall being around anybody who noted anything about Frasier. It's no Striking Distance.

Canadian Eric Radford, who with his skating partner Meagan Duhamel won gold (team event) and bronze (individual) this Olympics in pairs, has been out for several years. He's open about it but is much quieter than Adam R. And way back in the 90s, US Champ Rudy Galindo came out before he won Nationals. That was a brave thing at that time (it's still brave!) and he caught plenty of flak for it. He never went to an Olympics. So while Adam is a great skater (bronze this year in the team event), has a fun persona, and from everything I've seen is a good guy, there are some other North American male skaters who have been there too.

AIHMHB, my grandma was so pissed that my cousin hadn't ever had a big formal coming-out talk with her, because she didn't feel like she could out him to the other seniors she knew. All those other aging academic liberaler-than-thou seniors got to brag about their gay grandkids, and Grandma wanted to let on that she had one too. Cousin was too young for closets (despite growing up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area).

Also, I don't think Johnny Weir ever tweeted thus: "To all those who tweet at me saying that they "hope I fail", I have failed many times many times in my life. But more importantly, I've learned from every setback, proudly own up to my mistakes, grown from disappointments, and now I'm a glamazon bitch ready for the runway."

With nosflow re: AR not being "nothing to see here," disagree AR likely has never met discrimination in his life or that it was an easy, cost-less decision to come out, completely disagree with anyone who thinks even in a liberal uber bubble like SF a teen would think nothing of coming out, and was quite touched by this VF article https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/02/adam-rippon-gay-olympic-athletes

Kraabdad update: My dad is back home and I'm back in Austin. He'll be in the hospital for a couple more days and then in rehab for a week or so because he's really weak from the surgery and the long stint in bed. He's going to need to keep up with his physical therapy, but it looks like his recovery will be total, which is pretty amazing.

This thread isn't quite long enough to be jacked but I didn't want to put this on the school shooting thread -- though my dad actually lives in Broward County and the shooting happened the day after we got him home.

Great news SK Dad!

John Mahoney seems to me exactly of that last living generation in which an actor would be openly gay within the profession and that would never be mentioned outside it. It's a specific kind of closeted. Kevin Spacey seemed too young by about 10 years for that, Ian McKellan seemed ahead of his time.

I could be totally off here, but I feel like gay women on Broadway are still in that place, more than the men who are more free to be fabulous. Give it another five years.
