Re: Get Involved

If anyone has advice as to which candidates and funds will make the best use of my money, I would like to hear it. Thanks.

Jared Golden I think has a good chance of pushing out Bruce Poliquin in Maine 2.

Oh, huh. I put all this in the other thread.

But I think you can get too hung up on "the best use of my time/money". I took to heart the instruction to work in your own place. (I mean, send money anywhere; that's easy.) But the groups that fit into my schedule are working very close to me. I'm a little dubious, because I don't love those candidates all that much. I guess that means I have two criteria: convenient and working locally.

I guess I should also say that last year I got started working in Fresno on a progressive water platform, with groups in Fresno. I thought it would be hugely, incredibly revolutionary and just transform things by its own obviousness. And now that isn't happening and it looks like it may be an important piece of a long hard grind and that feels all stupid.

So I do have the luxury of switching between something that may be a lever, with long stupid work by better people than me, and tiny incremental things that are like tossing wishes into the world (postcards, calls, etc).

And, of course, there is arguing with people on Twitter. I'm sure I've changed minds; I just know it.

I'm sure it's the opposite of her intentions, but Megan sort of made me feel better about the likelihood that I will do close to nothing (I will vote, of course).

I did go to an anti-Trump protest last week when he made a brief uneventful fundraising visit to my fair city. It was a spur of the moment decision as I was leaving work, so I didn't have a sign, and somehow I just couldn't raise my voice along with the chants. "No Trump! NO KKK! No Fascist USA!" did get stuck in my head, so there was that.

I've kind of been hiding from the candidates all summer. I was in the 4th of July parade in a rural town, and carried the only Williams sign we had, and I did a shift manning the booth at the fair in early August (mostly registering voters). The Coordinated (Tester + Williams) has been looking for people all summer, and I was at an ice cream social with Tester a couple of weeks ago, and ended up signing up to knock doors. Which I'd always planned to do. And to host a volunteer, which we can totally do.

The Coordinated called me today to say 'summer's over, when can we give you a turf and a script?' Thursday.

Trump is coming, again, next week, so they think they can take Tester.

If you do the volunteer hosting will you have enough leverage to impose a noun on The Coordinated?

Coordinated Campaign. It's hipper to just say Coordinated.

Our primary is on Tuesday, so I was trying to think about who to vote for. Charlie Baker is pretty sure to win re-election, so I think I should just vote for the gubernatorial candidate I like and not worry about electability.

The perfectly good (as far as I can tell) Secretary of State is being challenged by some young guy who was endorsed by Marty Walsh, the mayor of Boston, who thought he was fresh blood who could engage millenials in the voting process.

Walsh went endorsed Capuano (the incumbent) in the 7th district, and most of the established politicians did, but Maura Healey (who I think is a great AG) endorsed Ayanna Pressley a black woman Boston city councilor. I think she got the UAW's endorsement as well. AFL-CIO went with Capuano.

I was listening to an interview with Tip O'Neill's son who was saying that people didn't appreciate the importance of Seniority and that that was what had allowed Boston to build the infrastructure which made it the city it is today.

So, I have a question: In the era of the modern Republican party and Trump, does that stuff really matter the way it used to - especially since so much of what needs to be done now is oppose bad stuff? This is an academic question for me, since I don't live in the district and won't be voting in that race.

Tell me what to do. I have maybe ten available weeknights and/or two weekends before the elections. I live in SF, so any in-person canvassing will require me to travel. I can do data analysis and web development.
