Re: Guest Post - The French Laundry is canceled

I like that they're big enough to have a head of HR, but apparently not a very good one.

Lots of companies are run by assholes, but I'd think usually the HR people would know enough to not conduct an illegal plot by email.

I would wait for a slightly later stage in the case before having a committed opinion that all the allegations are true. This bit makes me slightly skeptical:

On March 7, 2016, Scott-Allen was asked to sign a "Notice of Resignation" that management told her was a standard part of the transfer process, but her attorney says was a way to "dupe her into quitting." As a result of resigning, Scott-Allen lost her health insurance and was unable to see doctors for first-trimester check-ups, the lawsuit says.

It is possible that she was duped into quitting, but someone who signed a Notice of Resignation has to do a fair amount to make a case that she was actually told that she wasn't really resigning.

Yeah, the emails seem to me to drip with intent but that's not proof. I found the case record but the filings aren't downloadable.

This sort of thing was understandable back when Oliver North thought that simply pressing "delete" was enough to make all the incriminating evidence disappear. But 2019 seems a bit late for people to be getting into trouble because they're baffled by these strange devices called "computers".

They do look bad, but they're decontextualized quotes (unless there's more to them other than in the immediately linked story). Maternity leave is something that does require planning for coverage, and unless I missed something in the story, there isn't a full context for the emails that makes the illegitimate interpretation the only possible one. There's a good shot that the actual facts are as bad the story looks, but it's hard to be sure until the case has developed a little more.

Scott-Allen went on to work for the only other restaurant with three Michelin stars in Napa Valley, the Restaurant at Meadowood, through two pregnancies

Well, even if she wins, it doesn't seem like she can get much in damages. She didn't even have to sacrifice a Michelin star!

Losing insurance coverage while pregnant seems like damage.

Based on Bourdain's books I'm kind of surprised they didn't just stab her with a carving fork until she quit.

What does it mean if the leather uppers on your shoes develop creases asymmetrically? The toe on one shoe has more creases than on the other, the heel of the other shoe likewise. This happened on the previous pair but I thought it was because parts of the shoes were actually fake leather.

Asymmetrical gait, as evidenced by dissonant creases in leather shoes, is a common symptom of foot-and-mouth disease. You should get that looked at.

18: Dr. House would notice this near the end of the episode, and from that determine that you don't have cancer, AIDS, or ebola; it's actually a rare but highly treatable form of athlete's foot.

20: now now, the prevalence of that sort of behaviour (stabbing woman repeatedly causing miscarriage), would be ample cause for banning women from those positions, b/c yanno, they might be endangering their gestating fetuses. And. We. Can't. Have. That. [ref: "Johnson Controls"].

15: off the top of my head:
1) you have an asymmetrical gait for some reason - after-effect of an injury, one leg shorter than the other, curved spine, habitually carrying a big bag over one shoulder, that sort of thing
2) you do different things with each foot; driving is the most obvious one. The creases are the result of your right foot working an accelerator and brake for an hour or two a day while your left foot just sits there
3) creases form by chance and so you'll always get slightly different patterns on each shoe
4) there's a structural difference between your shoes - either the leather's different or maybe the sole of one is more flexible than the other

Texas-style Johnson controls:

LBJ: ... And another thing - the crotch, down where your nuts hang - is always a little too tight, so when you make them up, give me an inch that I can let out there, uh because they cut me, it's just like riding a wire fence. These are almost, these are the best I've had anywhere in the United States,

JH: Fine

LBJ: But, uh when I gain a little weight they cut me under there. So, leave me , you never do have much of margin there. See if you can't leave me an inch from where the zipper (burps) ends, round, under my, back to my bunghole, so I can let it out there if I need to.

JH: Right

I'm not saying it's apocryphal, but it's really interesting that the best-known story about LBJ is about how big his balls were.
