The problem is, the biggest assholes aren't engaged in self-reflection at all; they think they're great! So for me the real question is how to get these people asking, "How did I become such an asshole, and why haven't I perceived that I am an asshole?"
I can say from my professional experience that being obliged to watch your back every day makes you a worse person than you would otherwise be -- both in the things you passively ignore and the things you are willing to do.
