I see the Aussies are also moving their offshore refugee detainment center on Nauru to higher ground in PNG.

OP: Your swollen and sore throat sounds terrible. Make them take good care of you and make lots of soothing foods. Lots of soft or liquid things are sweet, so you might have them pick up a Kafir or other unsweetened yogurt, so you have something salty and sour to save your tongue from sweet overload. (Puddings and ice cream are delicious to have on hand - and pellet or shaved ice can nicely numb the throat and are smaller to swallow.)

Also don't be tempted to gargle with iodine or hydrogen peroxide or anything of that sort.

My in-laws have covid rn, but they're taking Paxlovid and fortunately seem to be okay. They'll have to miss Thanksgiving, which is too bad, but hopefully they'll come out of this unscathed and with some measure of immunity.

Now you don't have to hire the stealth vaccination special.

Anyway, I made two pies today and am currently finishing some onion soup using a new recipe that has leeks too.

Yesterday was really awful, because I was too uncomfortable to sleep soundly, even having raided the medicine cabinet. Today I've been able to sleep soundly most of the day, and I'm feeling significantly better.

I even filled out my American Community Survey from the Census Bureau on the last possible day! You would not believe how guilty I've been feeling over this stupid thing. I had sat down and filled out the first half a month or so ago, and then just stalled out.

I do have to fly tomorrow, so I'll wear a mask and hope that protects my fellow travelers from this nastiness.

I have covid for the second, if not third time. On the one hand, I was just at a major conference with hundreds of people and eating in crowded restaurants multiple times a day. On the other, I was re vaccinated in October so I'm surprised that didn't do slightly more to prevent catching it. Like last time, my main symptoms are sneezing, congestion, and some loss of smell. I'm also a bit draggy but honestly that's also likely the effect of conferencing. The plus is I get to lie in my room and avoid my MIL, but I'm going to be out out if I can't smell Thanksgiving dinner. It also sucks isolating from young children so I'm not doing the best job at that.

(Also btw I'm the only person I know who has sneezing as a main covid symptom)

June a year and a half ago I was the sickest I've ever been as an adult. Terrible sore throat, wicked cough. I was laid out for almost a month. It wasn't strep, covid, or the flu. They didn't test for rsv at the time so maybe it was that. Anyways it was orders of magnitude worse than my experience covid, which I caught in August that year.

Technically I don't think you need to isolate from small children when you have covid, but their parents may not appreciate my opinion.

Feel better Heebie! Do you use the numbing throat spray stuff? I never know what to think of that because my chemistry brain freaks out at the idea of spraying phenol in your mouth but it does feel good when you have a sore throat.

Does anyone know where to find accurate information on the latest strain of Covid? Or medical findings based on fully vaccinated individuals with post omicron Covid? Everything in the popular health media is drawing on findings from Covid research in 2020, which makes sense when you think about publication and media cycles but not so much when you want an accurate snapshot on what Covid means today. Most stuff that isn't Covid denial seems to be closer to Web MD level fearmongering.

Also my sense of smell seems to be returning. The drawback is now I can smell that I haven't showered in four days.

11, 16: We are also being counted this year, which is cool but also a little funny since we aren't the most characteristic of area demographics. I mean, there are a lot of same-gender couples coparenting children of other races and plenty of people for whom English isn't a first language, just I don't think any others where the specifics line up like they do for us. It was a little annoying to have to work out exactly how much we're paying in energy bills and so on, but I hope it will help someone figure things out someday. I also felt guilty about not doing it immediately, though I was six weeks or so ahead of heebie and can I guess feel better that they would have kept hounding me.

Yesterday was peak roid rage from my latest round of prednisone, hoping to knock out bronchitis before it becomes pneumonia. Since we didn't manage to keep the two post-Covid sinus infections from becoming bronchitis, I'm not sure how optimistic I should be. In many senses, my long Covid is mild, but it has also totally messed up my body in ways that will probably never recover and I'm not super excited about that.
