Re: The sloth of teenagers

A lot of adults still do quite enjoy sloth, though. Look at all those people who go on holiday to lie around on the beach or beside the pool all day, doing nothing more energetic than reading a magazine.

My son is 12--although I'd say he's definitely more teen than tween in terms of general vibe--and he's been driving me crazy for the same reason. Partly because when he does have to do stuff, he takes so long to get into gear and get shit done that it's infuriating. The only things that motivate him are spending time with other kids his age, or screens (Playstation or TV, he's relatively low key with his phone).

During term time, when his life is very structured, he's fine. He's at school, swimming, boxing, playing rugby, or messing about with his friends.*

* that's pretty low levels of structured activity compared to a lot of his friends.

This is actually good to hear. Our older kid (22) has real issues with getting up and doing things and some perspective about the banality of it might help me put things in perspective.

Perspective is hard to come by. Doomerism takes over sometimes, briefly.

It seems hard to compare due to technology. When I was 10 to 16, slothful solitary things to do included reading books, reading comic books (and the Comics Code Authority still had an iron grip on the industry), reading magazines, drawing, playing 8-bit console games, and watching one of the three channels of TV our antenna could get. I realize 10 isn't generally considered teenaged, but my daughter's 10, so it's salient. As for stopping at 16, that's when we got satellite TV.

But for Atossa, I feel obligated to make sure she's not watching comedians on YouTube make blowjob jokes. Objecting to "sloth" when it means supervising like that seems more reasonable.

Just got back from a vacation with friends where half were as Ajay described and the others wanted to do things. It would have been strained except that we know this about each other.

I'm a lot like Hebbie's self-view -- typically wanting to do things with that limited time off, but really enjoying sleeping in (and catching up on missing sleep) on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings. It's relatively constant that I'll sleep in late on weekends -- though I can still get up on time for projects, etc. and be fully functional (if annoyed) on weekend mornings.

I was bad at sleeping in even before we got a cat who expects to be fed at dawn. I wake up within half an hour of the same time whether I want to or not, barring jet lag or being up extremely late the night before. My sloth manifests by playing World of Warcraft or similar hobbies instead of sleeping in.

I sleep until 10:00 or so pretty much every day I don't work.

I've almost completely lost the ability to sleep in. It's terrible.

I can sleep in-ish, but I'm hit or miss at sleeping through the night.

11: 10 wouldn't be so bad, if I ever slept through the night.

I don't remember if I was like that as a teenager. It doesn't seem to me like I was particularly slothful. Maybe it seemed that way to adults because my priorities were different. Also I did sleep in.

If we could sleep through the night, we could sleep through the night and morning, if we could sleep through the morning.

I've always been terrible at sitting still while on trips, and not great at being active when at home. I've told myself on hikes or even trips to the coast where I didn't plan to hike that I'll just find a nice place to sit and read and then I find that I carried a book on a four mile hike and maybe read five pages.

Parents of sloths: are your sloths really crabby on mornings when commitments mean sleeping in isn't an option? Mine sure is and I can't wait for school to start in a few weeks.

Depends on the sloth and the activity.
