Just from those two reviews, I'd bet a reasonable amount that the whole "village" is a set-up by the elders, and the creatures are fakes designed to keep the unknowing villagers and children from leaving the village. Woo, spooky, kids!

In other words, your first sentence above.

Also, Sigourney Weaver is a guy! A dead guy!

Okay, just kidding on that last part.

if you really want to know the ending without wasting $10, go to moviepooper.com

(I actually linked to the entry page, not the one that would give away the answer, just so people wouldn't accidentally find out if they really didn't want to know).

It turns out--who knew?-- that one can find the answer with Google and so it was sort of dumb to ask. But what's lame about the real answer is that it's just as lame as you think after those nasty reviews.

M Night's next movie will begin with close-up of a guy on the can. Camera pans back. He's not in a bathroom at all, he's in the plumbing section of Home Depot. Cue scary music.

It would have been better if the Elders were sacrificing children to Moloch the Child-Eating God, or something. I mean, he could make a genuine Scary Movie without the big Allegorical Lesson(tm) tacked on at the end.

"It turns out--who knew?-- that one can find the answer with Google and so it was sort of dumb to ask."

I was politely not pointing that out. I used to have the bad habit of doing so.

But, Gary, it's much more fun this way.

Yes, there's a social aspect to asking a question, particularly in one's own place.

There's also a fun aspect to guessing, which is why I didn't use Google myself (until after my last comment, that is).

This is also why I try to remind people to use Google more infrequently than I once did.

Yes, my after-the-fact justification was along those lines. Sure, I could've claimed to have guessed right, but who'd believe it? On the other hand, could I have googled it, then feigned ignorance in order to look prescient? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.

I was sort of hoping someone would suggest the plot line that made the movie less awful. The trailer looked halfway cool, so surely there's an idea that could have gone in place of the lame-o twist. (You know it's bad when someone like me, who's not much above-average at guessing the impending surprise, not only thinks of the plot device but prefaces it with "please don't let it be....")

I dunno, here I was thinking, "Well, it can't be AS DUMB AS I THINK IT IS". I was thinking, maybe it's a really interesting allegorical commentary on the relations between settlers and natives, or maybe there really are monsters in the woods but the woods are really a sort of psychological space, a sort of ur-id--kind of like Holdstock's Mythago Wood. Who knows, I thought--but surely it can't be so dumb as "The village is really in the modern world and it's a sort of cult and the monsters are fake". Then I started to get my spidey-sense tingling when M.Night Shamalyan started saying "Well, the movie is about fear and how leaders use fear to manipulate people". Houston, we have a problem. And so I google it, and shit, yes, it's the stupid twist that anybody could intuit just by looking at commercials for the film, that might make the cut for an episode of Night Gallery or something but hardly for a whole theatrical release.

Settlers/natives might have been interesting, and we-are-the-woods (we are the monsters, we are the ones who make a brighter day so let's start living) is pretty good. Hell, even the basic ideas behind Let's Go Amish aren't complete clunkers-- the self-undermining quest for the goods of the past, misdirected fear, and so on...these could make a movie, right? But, oh, look, a movie about politics, only with shawls.

One thing that really interests me about this is the way that M Night's past work informs the new one-- any half-sensible moviegoer goes in looking for a surprise twist, and this changes the viewing experience. Sort of like how, in Pearl Harbor, we knew Ben Affleck's character couldn't be dead because he's too highly paid for that sort of thing. If I were John Holbo I'd say something supercool on this point.

This is a valuable service you have performed. I wish I had this kind of advice before investing two hours in "The Others". I did wait until I could get it on DVD from my library, but two hours is a long time and a lot of anguished Nicole Kidman to suffer through to get to the punchline. Now, I won't repeat that mistake with this one. I hate pretentious B movies. They usually forget to set up the "high concept" that makes watching a good "B" fun. Why is that so hard to understand?
