Less furiously, I wonder if it is that Dems (or maybe just I) tend to belive in an aspirational America that continues to self-perfect as a government, while baa and other Republicans have some other model in mind - perhaps a minimum set of principles that are acceptable to the majority, and who then are left to self-perfect themselves within that framework. (I realize these don't describe non-intersecting sets, but it gets at what I mean tonally).

I think I just find it shocking when people as thoughtful as baa don't find the Bush Administration's civil liberties assertions shocking (particularly given the wildly trivial threat that is used to justify them).
