Ben, I hate to put you on point after receiving your high praise, but is it your policy not to split the infinitive?
It's not a policy. I like slightly stilted, antiquated sound putting the word in front of "to" creates. If it were policy I would have written "to expand crassly"; I think that sounds more natural.
