In some good news, I was just reading this NYT article, which is finally sticking it to Frist for legislative shenanigans.
This makes me so ill. Notwithstanding my hatred of the Bush administration, torture happens in this country, in state and federal prisons. It happens in countless other countries. We're doing it at home, abroad, wherever we can, and so is everyone else.
The notion that we have the right and duty and privilege of imprisoning people and treating them however we wish has turned out to be a fucking scourge on humanity.

1: I think that these are terrible crimes, and the fact that some abused their positions of authority to effect the crimes compounds the problem, but I don't view them as meriting any more shame than the horrors, often far worse than those at Abu Ghraib, that citizens here inflict upon each other on a regular basis. Nor do I view them as surprising, or new. Maybe it's the cynic in me, but I find it difficult to believe that similar abuses were not perpetrated upon captured Japanese soldiers in WW2, or captured Korean soldiers during the Korean War. And Vietnam...
Except that, AFAIK, no one in the government wrote a memo justifying it as legal.

As I noted in 20, all the pictures that the Australians obtained and released (as I understand it) are at the Reuters link I gave.
Of course, as I noted, the WaPo says they have all those hundreds more they think that it's unnecessary for us to see.
