A bunch of smallish counties

Half of Jefferson County, which went for McCaskill
15% of Jackson County (AKA Kansas City), fairly strongly McCaskill
Half of St. Louis County, the largest county in the state and fairly strongly McCaskill.

I don't know Missouri geography well enough to know if there's a ton of Talent votes still to come, but at least a fair percentage of the remaining votes seem to be from largely Democratic areas.

Webb's speech was a soft declaration of a victory. He did say something like, "The votes are in and we won," but only after a bunch of stuff about respecting the process. Still: 30,000+ votes from Fairfax Co. yet-to-be-counted. w00t!

The thing is, whichever way these tight races go, the fact that R incumbents in places like Virginia and fucking Stockton, CA are that close to losing their seats is a miracle. My recollection was that there were 140k registered Dems in Bernalillo County, 120k registered Republicans, and 70k Decline to State - so a total vote of 110k seems rather low. But you are probably right about missing the absentees, which I think I heard were another 20k. Or, most likely, it's another case of my faulty memory

KOB is now claiming 92% of precincts:
Patricia Madrid (D) 94,213 50%
Heather Wilson, incumbent (R) 93,422 50%

that's tight.

True, no matter which stupid, corrupt democrat they run, the clean smart likeable republican wins. Phil Maloof?? Stupid and corrupt. Didn't Eric Serna run against her, too? Also stupid and corrupt. Romero? Perhaps just not terribly bright, but loyal to Richardson and the old time party folks, as were all of 'em.

Of course, John Wertheim and Matt Farrauto are stupid, too, and may well be corrupt. Lots of nasty rumors about whose bedmate was getting the no-work lucrative contract from the party.

So are absentee ballots counted in the current totals out of Virginia? I sure hope so. There's still the provisional ballots out there and if, as seems likely, Republicans set things up to challenge likely Democratic voters (read: minorities) then it seems that those are likely to be skewed Democratic by a fair degree.

webb now up 7815 due to votes in arlington county.

my estimates are way off, it seems because virginia precincts are of widely varying sizes, and the ones that come in late are the biggest ones. anyway, of the 9 precincts left, 5 are in pro-allen areas and 4 are in pro-webb areas, including two from the city of richmond (72% for webb).

with that in mind, plus the extra ballots to be counted tomorrow, webb's lead looks good for now. on absentee ballots, I have no idea.

off to bed! fwiw, CNN has the parts of fairfax that are reporting as going 57% dem; I'd expect this to hold, more or less, across the extra ballots (assuming they're still uncounted -- I didn't see coverage of it on TV). It's not really a large or varied enough county to have big variations across precincts.

I'm not sure what kind of ballots they are. I was wondering whether they might be absentee, which might include a disproportionate number of military folks (who might break slightly less for Allen than a normal Repub., given Webb's Navy experience, but still more for Allen, I think). The Senate is a weird place. With the likes of Lieberman and Nelson, Stevens will not be replaced by a liberal wet-dream, no matter the count. We are going to get at best a right-centrist, unless Bush wants to play games and motivate the base in '08.

Remember, even frigging Finegold thinks about the Prez perogative.

I think that provisional ballots are defined as those where the would-be voter's standing to vote has been challenged. As I said above, I'm betting this skews Democratic. I don't think there's any word on how many provisional ballots there are out there.

243: A lot of Virginia absentees are going to be military guys and gals, who are none too pleased with the Republicans these days....

A lot of folks in the military aren't too happy with the Republicans these days and Webb is a vet, but even taking those into account, I'd bet that the military vote skews Republican there.

1958 All Over Again

Sistersaralou at Nexthurrah remembers 1948 and 1960. I was gonna post last night about the 60s. I am old, so old, only Sawicky and sara are older.

The sixties had hope. The sixties were hell, and boundless disappointment, but jesus god, hope covers and suffers a ton of pain. And there was hope all the way thru. Foolish and crazy and stoned, but even at the end there was hope. A better world, a lttle more freedom, a little less hungry, a lot less war.

I haven't had much hope since about 1975. That is 31 mothering years, more years than some of ya have lived. All going to the right, always the good guys losing or merely holding serve.

The fucking house counts, beeches. The house is the country. The Prez is a gofer. I watched the house bring down one nasty tough sumbitch thirty years ago. The country turned on Nixon, and tonight the country turned against Bush.

It ain't nothing but the beginning, and there will be a lot of horrors, but I think we are in an decade of hope for the first time in thirty years. It is gonna be a fucking ruuuusssh, folks, Buckle up.

What really annoys me though, is that the two serious Independence party candidates, Peter Hutchinson for Gov. and Tammy Lee for House District 5, are both former DFL hacks who just came into the race as idiotic spoilers! Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick! You hardly ever seen the Repugs pulling shit like this! They have party discipline.
