Re: IM Not Amused

The away message is my brother's -- I'm sure he's fine (my mother would have called if it was something important). I'm not concerned but thanks to his little message now I'm going to wonder what's going on. The little shit.

(This thread was not intended to ask for sympathy -- more for musing/complaining about the limitations of technology. Or whatever threadjack comes to pass.)

Communication through away messages is pretty funny. There have been times I've gotten really annoyed at someone's away message, particularly people who are going through breakups. It's like, get over yourself already.

Or whatever threadjack comes to pass.

Happy to oblige! I have to be in New York for a few days in late January, and am looking for advice on places to stay. My main concerns are that it be basically clean and decent, and near to where I need to be (35th between 7th and 8th.) Oh yeah, and that it won't break the budget completely. Any suggestions?

And, is your nose just out of joint, or did it get broken somehow? Did you try to slap your forehead and miss? Were you struck by a flung remote?

JL, one thing that might work, if other suggestions don't pan out, is to try the "Sublease" section on craigslist. Rent is so high and so many folks are struggling to pay it while they live out their NYC dreams that there are an astounding number of places to be had, whether for just a weekend or several months or whatever, offered by people who have to travel outside the city for a while or even by folks who have a couch somewhere else in the city to crash on and do the sublease thing occasionally to help make ends meet. One big bonus is you usually have access to a kitchen, which saves money on your food bills.

Thanks. I'm not so worried about food bills, as my employer will pick all that up--same for accommodations, of course, they'll just like me not to break the bank (we're a non-profit, after all.)

Oh wait. I misread 4 as:

To: M/tch M/lls
Away
ER, getting my nose reset

i.e. that it was Beck's away message. But it's my nose that's broken. Now that makes much more sense. Damn but I'm smart.

Shoulda skipped that fourth bloody mary.

Same here. Everyone should be more like me and opt for brief but gnomic away messages along the lines of what one might select for the Unfogged hover text.

Can we get an Ask the Mineshaft going on some of these pressing questions?

Good idea, arthegall.

• Given the exchange and dispersion of matter, how likely is it/how often do we inhale/consume and/or incorporate into our own protein structure molecules that were once in some historical figure, say Abraham Lincoln?

This happens to everyone 100% of the time. Molecules are very small things.

• If we taught animals to talk, how would that affect the world?

Peter Singer: New US President

• Is it possible to collect all the cookie dough in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream and actually bake cookies from it?

Yes.

• How clean is bar soap in a public bathroom? Is it "self-cleaning," since it's soap? It seems like a health hazard to me.

It's only "self-cleaning", whatever that means, if it's antibacterial.

• Why did Zidane head-butt his opponent in the World Cup final? Do the French not fight with their fists?

He's gay; they are lovers, not fighters.

• When we are approaching another person, like in a hallway, why do we step to our left? That is, try and pass right-shoulder-to-right-shoulder.

Assumes facts not in evidence.

• Why do humans die so young? In biblical times, people lived for several hundred years; now living to 100 is considered a long life. What happened?

People eat too many prepackaged foods nowadays. Read D. Manus Pinkwater's "Lizard Music" for more information on this topic.

• Why is grilled chicken tasting increasingly rubbery and odd?

Because chicken is made industrially and its manufacturers are more concerned with uniformity and superficial appearance than taste or nutrition.

• Do dolphins actually save people? If so, why do they do this?

Yes; to bargain for sex.

• Can someone be forced to masturbate?

Yes, but not to orgasm.

• Can a state in the United States split into two or more states? If so, how? I think Texas has a special provision for being able to divide into up to five states. But I am wondering about the others.

States of the United States are members of the phylum Echinodermata and therefore yes, they can do this.

• Is chicken considered meat?

It's neither fish nor fowl, so yes.

Do you know that for sure about the cookie dough? Because I already forwarded that to Catherine and Armsmasher with a note that we had to try it if we couldn't find proof either way. (and blog it being the implied addendum)

(Um, the last question at the Slate page.)

Becks, if the dough doesn't have baking soda in it, it might not rise very well. While I admire your empirical spirit, you might consider that the ingrediants for cookie dough will cost like a third of what the cookie-dough-containing ice cream would. Yes, I'm a soul-crushing cheapskate.

18 - What price knowledge, Jackmormon?

Since I'm not going home until UnfoggeDCon, I bet someone on the internet will beat us to it. There is something amusing about the idea of turning cookie dough ice cream into ice cream sandwiches made only out of its constituent parts, though, that makes me sad we won't be the ones to do it.
