That's why God made the BART.

That can be some exciting/scary shit when it's hilly. There's some really steep inclines on the east side of the Salt Lake area, and I've done some pretty hairy slides down those things in a little Toyota Celica.

Cali is out of control. My parents get ridiculous offers for their Arcadia house. I remember visiting the cousins in Oakland in the 80's. And now we see gentrification in Oakland. What the hell.

Gentrification in Oakland? What rot. As born Oakland gentry I can tell you it's always been there. Piedmont is a living paroxysm of gentrification, and montclair is a failed outpost of marin. Rockridge attempts the gentle affect, but is only able to maintain the facade until 10 P.M. Yeah, the city is better off than during the 80s. You can walk downtown now. But I do not reccommend strolling down Foothill, or San Pablo. I live in Boston now, and I get to sneer at what they call "ghetto": in the north east, apparently, the liquor store is not a community meeting place, and pedestrians are not subject to improvised checkpoints.

Yeah, it's definitely not the whole town.

Heh. That's how I felt moving to Salt Lake. What people call a "bad area" here is a joke.

Portland, OR, also has a substandard ghetto. Some parts of the city are pretty high in burglary, but you don't get the "mean streets" feeling anywhere.

Anyone catch "West Side Story" on cable recently? I was thinking that a single gun-shot and body falling now would just signal the start of a Boy Scout meeting in L.A.

That shit is uncalled for. The problem is, not that this is news to anyone here, what's available to read, information-wise, and the non-teaching of anything resembling critical thinking or accurate history in most places, red or blue.

I stand by that extremely convoluted sentence.

Hey M/tch and Kraab, you guys should take a cue from Becks and that crowd -- when they needed a new place to live they rounded up some like-minded bloggers and opened a commune. You could establish a Flophouse outpost in Austin. Reckon slol and them would be into it. (Ack, wait, is is slol or soubz that lives in Austin?)

Neither, I don't think. heebie-geebie lives here, though.

Which reminds me, the next UnfoggedCon is going to be in Austin. We're going to call it "Unf by Unf Ogged". Date not yet determined.

Which also reminds me, could one of you nice Unfogged posters pretty please put up a post about the upcoming Texas Mini-Meetup? It's going to be Saturday, January 20th.

Confirmed attendees so far include me, Sir Kraab, heebie-geebie, soubzbqskrisquket (sp?; he's driving in from Houston with his inamorata), Neil the Ethical Dance Machine, and maybe a couple of people from our local Drinking Liberally group.

The plan is to meet for dinner (venue not yet decided), and afterwards go for some drinks at the wonderful Carousel Lounge. Any lurkers in the area or anyone else who can make it is most welcome.

It would be cool to have you come. </low-hanging fruit>

This is the local alt. paper's music listings. It comes out on Thursdays though and usually only shows the following week's shows. What kind of music are you interested in? I can check with the most likely venues to see what's available that weekend.

Also, we can probably scrounge up some lodging for you too if you need it.

33. thanks, Mitch. If I can make it, lodging would probably come in handy. I'm not entirely sure how to describe my music tastes; I listen mainly to folk and indie, some blues, but I'll listen to anything as long as I like it. That's probably not very helpful.

Unrelated, but I'm shopping online for a tape measure since they didn't have what I wanted at the Home Depot. I checked out reviews for The Big Johnson (sweet, huh?), and I'd like to nominate this reviewer for a fellowship at the mineshaft:

I now have a Big Johnson, So, I gave it to my wife, and told her to stop complaining (rim shot goes here). Okay, seriously, it's a great little tape, but the lock was way too stiff (optional rim shot here) when new, and then failed to lock the tape after a few months. But I still use it, because it's sturdy and the tape is stiff (no, I really mean that).

If you are interested in it, come over to my place and then come back here to talk about it since I don't have any comments section.
