Re: The probability that Mark Steyn is a dick moves ever closer to unity

Jesus tapdancing Christ. Was the Dartmouth Review so successful that conservatives have to play its greatest hits even now? Alternatively, hasn't anyone ever punched Steyn in the face?

One salutary effect of Obama's run is that people not so inclined to great feats of sensitivity will have a better sense of the crap black people put up with.

This from someone who uses nasty words in text messages, I know, but still.

Did you know that Roger Ebert's wife is black? I had no idea.

He always thanks her in his books, and for some reason, I always imagined her looking like Roz from Fraiser, probably because Chaz sounds kinda like Roz.

I think the first rule in media careers is "know your audience."

1. Vile.
2. Almost certainly justified in his mind by the enthusiasm he perceives is based on Obama's very existence as an inspiring presentable, and inspiring because presentable, candidate. Based on race, above all, and the way he uses it while appealing to those who want to be beyond it.

As someone who was mobilized in January 2004 to be part of a stealth campaign for Obama, which we expected to be a hard uphill fight but turned into a walk, who has watched reaction to his candidacies at the local, state and now national level and gauged his appeal, I have to say that if that is what Steyn and his mindset resents, and I think it is, then it's an understandable, if contemptible reaction. It isn't as if Republicans haven't used fundamentally irrational appeals and wishful thinking to get candidates elected who might not have been the best prepared or qualified to do the job.

"As someone who was mobilized in January 2004 to be part of a stealth campaign for Obama."

I'm so jealous. I want to be mobilized! For stealth campaigns! For Obama! Back in '04, when I had youth & time.

when he'll feel all of his 45 years

Aside from the obvious racial stuff, WTF? Is 45 considered old now? And from a party that gives us St. Ronnie, and now John McCain at 70+?

re: 1

People like Steyn are always making enraging remarks from behind the protection of their wealth or privilege or identification with same; and just like AWOL Dubya, will hide in those same precincts from actual physical threat to themselves. If someone did punch Steyn in the nose he'd/she'd find a lawsuit headed their way in no time whatsoever.

re: 7

Is that because of the stealthy Schakowsky-ness of your surroundings?

Punching him in the face might be satisfying, but really, the stakes would be pretty low. The guy is a Canadian chickenhawk drama critic.

Whoa.

After we get a Democrat in the White House, I wonder if the craaaaaazy leftists on the internets ought not turn their mouthfoamy fury toward running the entire pundit class out of Washington, all with dogs and torches and such.

15: Welcome! Welcome! You've finally arrived!

Yes it was: she convened about 30 of us in a church basement.

Winning is always fun, and Ryan's self-destruction(husband of Geri), and the weird dissarray of Republicans generally after the other Ryan's disgrace made a fertile field, such as had existed before when Carol Moseley Brown won and then wasn't ready for prime time, made for very fortuitous circumstances. Is Barack the best prepared? Doesn't matter and we'll have to see.

Oh, come now. Steyn is only showing solidarity with our dark-skinned brethren. If you think he's being racist, it's because of what's going on in your mind.

Also, I note that 3 is a confession.

14: He's not saying that Obama is old, he's saying that if Obama is lazy. That is, if Obama is ever quoted, even an offhand out-of-context way, about being tired or having an uphill climb or something, he must be making excuses and accidentally revealing a character defect.

The newspaper I work for got an email from Bob Dole's lawyer when we called him old. And he's over 87.
