Re: I asked for another mission, and for my sins they gave me one

I am trying to convince myself that either Trent Lott or Thad Cochran give a shit *how* many phone calls they get supporting this, but I'm having some trouble doing it.

Can I get adopted by a state with liberal senators?

Thanks! I saw this, and was being lazy about posting it. Clinton's a sponsor, so I suppose I needn't call her, but Schumer's not on the list.

Specter wrote the damn thing, but I wonder if Casey's a sure thing.

I wasn't on crack, after all! And Cornyn and Kay Bailey Breck Girl added me to the do not call list, so nuts to them.

Come up to Wisconsin, Anderson, where you can experience the frustration of never being able to call your senator in high dudgeon.

[Even Herb Kohl is only worthy of low dudgeon.]

Both of my Senators are sponsors. Is it worth calling them? In general, I tend to agree with a lot of what Kennedy does. (I'm kind of annoyed with him over his opposition to Cape Wind, and that seems sort of NIMBY-esque to me.)

I know that he's likely to vote the right way, but is it helpful for me to reinforce how important specific issues are to me.

Casey damn well better support it 'cause we're never getting him out of office ever. Why is Specter not a Democrat?

Schumer called, message left with staffer. I figure he would have been on board regardless, but given that he's not listed as a co-sponsor, you never know.

Speaking of Menendez, did that 'investigation' from before the election ever turn into anything, or was it politicized Justice Department bullshit?

Can we all leave messages for Lieberman telling him not to be a dickhead? He's going to be one of the swing people. Can we all pretend to be from Connecticut?

Not to trivialize the thread, but I've always appreciated that quote from Apocalypse Now and seeing it at this moment is quite appropriate to my mood.

But, looking up the full quote, it seems wrong to change it to "I asked for another mission"

"Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service. It was a real choice mission, and when it was over, I never wanted another."

10: Because he's a weasel. He's let us down dozens of times. He'd be a Liebercrat at best.

I do not understand "moderate" Republicans who are not just slime artists.

I want to call my senators (California) on this. Should I just be using any one of the numbers in the linked post?

That works, or google their names to get their office numbers -- they all have contact numbers on their websites.

If you can't get through to the Washington office, calling a home-state office should work just as well, and I think they all have them.

If you call a home-state office they'll write down what you say and fax it to the DC office (or at least that's how it worked at the office where I interned). This can result in some delay, depending on how busy they are.

Office is apparently busy signals, both through the switchboard and direct lines. Oh well, Senator Feinstein is a co-sponsor and Senator Boxer isn't on the Judiciary committee, so I guess this isn't time-rush-urgent. I wrote emails in support of the measure today, maybe I can call them later.

I think that you people who have conservative or moderate Senators are the ones who are kind of lucky -- at least you can have the feeling that you're doing anything. I mean, it's great that my state can be counted on to go against your typical mindlessly evil Bushie concept, but it lends the feeling that you can't do anything, you know?

Yeah, Presidential elections are like that for me -- like NY is going to go R. Mostly, what gets me to the polling place is seeing if Charlie Rangel can break 98%.

All that aside, where do you move if you want to influence a senator? I've never actually lived in a place where my vote mattered; it might be a kick to yell at a senator. I can tell that Mass And CA are out: would OH do the trick?

I take it, from this thread's lack of replies, that you all feel you lack missions, for all your various sins. You all are wrong, redeem yourselves, !

33: Well, I'm no expert on congressional politics. I would imagine that people who might be potentially valuable to call up and yell at would be either Democrats who voted for the Military Comissions Act, or moderate Republicans, particularly ones in threatened seats.

I don't think that I have the congressional-fu to figure out who's in the latter category. In the former:

Carper (D-DE)
Johnson (D-SD)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Lieberman (D-CT) (Now Independent, probably not amenable to persuasion)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Salazar (D-CO)
Stabenow (D-MI)

I have no idea which of those may or may not have committed opinions. List from here:
