Also really fascinating: The History Channel's Cities of the Underworld.

The thing on PBS last night about German rockets and atomic stuff was great.

Er, that should be specifically Nazi rockets and atomic stuff. Apparently there were secret caches of unprecedented aircraft left here and there in sites fled by the Nazis, and the planes were in perfect condition, possibly left there to impress the Allies, and some brave British pilots had the job of trying to fly them.

I like Futurama reruns. Zapp Brannigan is a powerful, tragic figure.

Has anyone seen Paris je t'aime? Potentially awesome: 18 short films, each representing a different arrondissement. I'd see it just for the one with Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazzara and GĂ©rard Depardieu -- zut!

Tonight's double feature: The Last Waltz and The Seven Samurai. (The similar construction of these two titles: entirely coincidental.)

(The Last Waltz is first because Ellen wants to watch that with me, then go to bed while I watch the other.)

At first I thought this post was about an awkward, halting courtship Ogged was having with a girl in a cafe. When I realized it was about some stupid movies then my interest totally evaporated.

Bill Nighy is a treasure. Recommend anything with him, mostly the intimate British films, but I liked Underworld.

I saw Greg Araki's Doom Generation last night, and the awkward, halting courtship of the first half was fabulous. Not sure what I think about the castration in the second half, but the soundtrack by Ride & Slowdive make it definitely worth a spot in your queue.

Say, has anybody who is not Neil Diamond sung "Come Dry Your Eyes"? Has it been a good song when sung in a less wet manner?

Neil Diamond wrote "Dry Your Eyes" for his 1976 album 'Beautiful Noise',so it is his song. But Frank Sinatra covered it.

it is his song

Right but he does not sing it very well. Does Frank? I was thinking more like a country and western musician of some sort.

Anything with Kelly Macdonald in it is good. One of the great underrated movie actors of our time.

Nighy is just fine, but Macdonald makes a pic.

"I saw Greg Araki's Doom Generation last night"

Araki is god.

Check out Nowhere too, bob. It runs on cable from time to time.

Is the Attenborough narration much better than Sigourney Weaver's? I got suckered into buying the set from the Discovery Channel, immediately after it appeared. It's visually breathtaking. Only later did I learn of the BBC version.

Should I spring for it?

You can hear Attenborough on a lot of the youtube clips. I haven't heard the Weaver, but the Attenborough is really good.

Just came from the opening of Sicko, which was pretty good, although nothing new to most blog-reading, Moore-movie-watching lefties. Certainly would be nice to see it change the way some Americans think about health care.

The fat be-capped one showed up and was mobbed, which was entertaining. Someone offered a bottle of their prescription meds for him to autograph, which I thought was clever.

(also, I don't remember any castrating in Doom Generation. Maybe I'm thinking of a different Araki movie, but I don't think so...)

Macdonald is pretty good. Also, (whisper it) very attractive.

Also, Attenborough is a living legend.

Wasn't Kelly McDonald in Trainspotting? The link doesn't list it, but she sure as hell looks like her. Either way, the both of them are teh (whispered)hott, and at least one is a good actress.

Fuck. She is listed as being in TS, right in between "Flowers of the Forest" and "Stella Does Tricks. What crap usage. But: good news! The Coens are filming No Country for Old Men and it a) includes Ms. McDonald and Javier Bardem, and b) is coming out on my birthday. So I win anyway.

"Macdonald is pretty good. Also, (whisper it) very attractive."

The crucial question is whether she's sexier in Trainspotting or Gosford Park.

It's a very close match. Trainspotting has the edge for the jailbait angle, but she's got much more screentime in Gosford Park to be appreciated.

In the end, I think Trainspotting gets the win because her intro sequence from the disco to the cab to the apartment is just so fucking killer.

Yes, she's the schoolgirl that Renton goes home with after clubbing in the Volcano [real club, I used to go there, was demolished about 10 years ago].

The truth is that you're a quiet sensitive type but, if I'm prepared to take a chance, I might just get to know the inner you. Taxi! A little bit crazy, a little bit bad. But hey -- don't us girls just love that?

"are filming" is a very strange way to describe a movie which everyone loved at Cannes.

Also, I wouldn't have thought that Petey was a straight Araki fan.

It is kinda spoiler territory. There is good stuff after midnight if you have full cable, but sometimes I am drowzy. I remember the strobes and the really big garden shears and a threat and a scream and a cut to a couple in a car and:"Do you want a Dorito?"

34: I've only seen the Naples one, but I have the Budapest, London, NYC, and Paris episodes recorded. The guy hosting it can be a little annoying (there had to have been forty instances each of "wow," "cool," and "amazing"), but I was transfixed.
