"that's awful nice of him to say, but it really isn't up to him, I don't think"

So good.

I don't watch these guys very often, but I am super impressed by the fact that they didn't go for the obvious joke on the pronunciation of Ahmedinejad. Try to imagine Jeff Foxworthy - who mines the same redneck humor vein - foregoing that gag.

Really very funny - and baa mentioned the line that got the biggest laugh out of me.

Except without the humor.

Or that "Larry the cable guy" dude. Where are the jokes? There are no jokes!

7: It's very difficult for us middle-aged white males to talk about race and gender without going all meta - that is, without commenting on how difficult it is for us to discuss race and gender.

These guys leaned heavily on the meta crutch, but I thought it came off beautifully.

They're brilliant!

Sorry, that's racist, isn't it?

Either way, you probably shouldn't say it.

Jeff Foxworthy - who mines the same redneck humor vein

Not entirely. Both these guys and Foxworthy are walking a fine line, but it's a different line.

With Foxworthy, it's the fine line between laughing *with* an audience that recognizes a little bit of themselves in his humor and poking fun at ignorant rednecks. Foxworthy manages to stay on the right side of the line by virtue of his accent and the occasional reminders that he has a fair bit of redneck DNA himself. I say this as a sort-of fan of Foxworthy, FWIW.

The Red State report guys are, to my mind, far more subversive. They walk a line between inhabiting an unsophisticated character and injecting a level of sophistication into the characters' utterances that produces an "out of the mouths of babes" effect. They stay on the right side of the line by the utter verisimilitude of the characters' speech. If you didn't know better, you might imagine that the bearded guy is an over-the-top parody of a hillbilly, but anyone who grew up in that region knows someone who talks exactly like him.

Foxworthy not only wouldn't have resisted the joke, he couldn't have gotten beyond the joke, because his audience would no longer recognize themselves in the dialogue in this skit. He would have had to go off on a tangent about a trip to New York, and how his family conducted NYC's first ever pissing-for-distance contest from the hotel balcony, which contest was won by his cousin Rose, etc., etc.

Yeah, very much so.

knows someone who talks exactly like him

Ain't it the truth. And I went to high school with about two dozen guys who undoubtedly grew up to be Dunlap.
