Did I tell you I've a good friend, a comic nut to be sure, who grew up reading Gil Thorp and reads it more or less straight?
"Reading it straight" vs. "reading it not-straight" is a curious distinction. Is Gil Thorp like the duck-rabbit of the comics page?
By straight I mean "is entertained by and respects the story as written, its surface meaning." Is not interested in nor particularly struck by absurdity or incongruity in it.
