Weird - we currently have The Conversation from Netflix. Trying to get the GF to watch it (and a host of other films I think Everyone Must See).

BTW, when did Bill Richardson turn Wookie?

Story comma interest would help but yeah, shoot this fucker of a sentence dead right now.

There's an essay, I think by Mary McCarthy, where she talks about a creative writing student who says that he has all but finished a work, and all he has left to do is to put the symbols in. I'm pretty sure that was the phrase.

McCarthy was famously opposed to "symbol-hunting," so I've no doubt that's where to start. She opposed the modernist project generally, as my close friend Stephen argues. (And if you need to go off-blog for this, he'd be the person to ask.)

Nelson Goodman quotes Mary McCarthy telling the story in Ways of Worldmaking. As he quotes it, the punchline is "we're going to put in the symbols."

Wow, blegs work really well.

I was wondering about something that I can't figure out with google. I was flipping through channels and saw a clip from what must have been a big-budget movie musical. A young Andy Rooney was in an office, behind a desk, there was a lot of singing and dancing by him and other people in business attire, and the most distinctive feature was that there were dozens of cats running around. That's all I could tell. What movie was this?!? It looked awesome.

I find it interesting that I remembered this as being overheard in a fiction if in fact I got it from Goodman! And since I have read WW, and that somewhat recently, that must (as I said) be it. Hum, hum.

It appears to have originated in her essay "Settling the Colonel's Hash", which appeared in Harper's February 1954 issue (available subscribers only here.) But free version available here. "Mr. Converse is going over it with me and we're going to put in the symbols." Google foo was stymied by the word order difference in Ben's version.

I just grabbed a couple frames from The Conversation (though the lapels in question are never really shown to much advantage, suit's too dark). Can put them in an email, if you tell me where to direct it.

I don't see what 2, 4, and 27 have against "But what is it?", unless it's some version of the hoary, and bad, rule that one shouldn't begin a sentence with "and", extended beyond reason to "but". Or maybe you object to the fourth sentence, beginning with "also"? Anyway, I'm baffled.

The problem is with the "There's some book ..." sentence. Which is damn near incomprehensible. Unless, of course, there's some sort of stylistic joke going on.

I turned 40 today. My back hurts. I am going to bed.

If it's any comfort, that was the age at which my mother finally realised she didn't give a shit what anybody thought about her any more and totally started to fly. I was going to say something about the no longer giving a shit part in the "AWB's mother" thread, but then I thought that giving strangers suggestions for their relatives is a bridge too far. But it can be true! Life begins at 40.

Speaking of turning 40, here's the trailer for Judd Apatow's next movie. I say it looks just so-so, not as good as his others.

Chopper, as I was a poor college student when I lived in NOLA, I mostly know things at the lower end of the spectrum. On trusted sources, however, I would say Antoine's is your best bet for the high-end for dinner.

For "nice" but not "fancy", I always enjoyed taking out-of-towners to the outdoor jazz brunch at The Court of Two Sisters on a pretty day because it let people sample a lot of different kinds of New Orleans cuisine without committing to one dish and their courtyard (at least pre-Katrina, don't know about now) was beautiful.
