Re: Thwarted!

Technically, both those articles appeared today.

And the statue's falling on Mitys' killer was caused by something, no doubt, but not Mitys' killer having killed Mitys, even if it's true that such events seem not to be due to mere chance.

The Times:

In addition to established figures like Colin Firth and Helen Mirren, Oxfam is affiliated with Scarlett Johansson

How solecistic! Surely it's not that Oxfam is affiliated with the lovely ScarJo, but that she is affiliated with it, and the sentence structure suggests that Oxfam is joining Firth and Mirren in being affiliated with Johansson.

Funny, that sounds like a cheesy deus ex machina plot. I thought Aristotle sneered at those.

Scarlett and Natalie dominate of the atheist pinup field, though I'm not completely sure that they've kept to the faithlessness of their respective parents.

Boo to Mike Nichols, who made a PG-rated stripper movie because he had a paternal feeling about Portman. Directors are supposed to be sleazeballs. Nichols will never match Polanski, obviously, escpecially considering that Portman was of legal age when the movie was made. If I were the producer of the movie I'd sue the bastard.

Nichols was born in Berlin and, IIRC, can be seen as an infant in photos with Russian Exiles like the Pasternaks and the Nabokovs. That only gets him partial forgiveness.

You're right, Fontana, we must stop Yglesias before he attempts to murder Portman.

I don't know from Mitys at Argos. But maybe he's assuming that the statue is a memorial? So killing Mitys in a sense caused the statue to be constructed.

And perhaps the statue was badly constructed for reasons also having to do with the murderer? Perhaps because he refused to donate to the memorial fund, so that they couldn't do the job right? Perhaps the murderer actually constructed the memorial himself, laughing all the while, and constructed a defective statue while pocketing the money?

Nah, it sounds too stupid.

In contrast to the undoubtedly purposeful trumping of MY's ambitions at the NYT. "Traub! I need you to rewrite that fluff piece you did on celebrity philanthropy to lead with a 4-year old anecdote about Natalie Portman, and I need it today!"

They're born atheists. They haven't been reborn yet, AFAIK. They should probably be regarded as atheist until proven otherwise. They may be secular or Reform atheists.

Portman played a woman accused of atheism in the Goya film. She supports Hillary.

By contrast to Nichols, Woody Allen behaved in an appropriately skeezy way around Scarlett. No word as to whether there was any real action, though. No strong evidence about her present beliefs, but apparently she was creeped out when she found out that she was being auditioned for the Katie Holmes role in the Scientology baby-making machine. Scarlett has made lustful statements about Barack.

obviously, if your models for good direction are Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, you are going to assume that all good directors are skeevy men.

Do any famous female directors have a record of skeeving?

Seems like the guys still dominate in the film industry. But, we're seeing some strong plays from the women in teaching.

Are you suggesting that Oxfam's agents wouldn't crawl across broken glass to be affiliated with the lovely Scarlett Jo? I say bollocks to that, sir!

Oxfam is big in the small world of non profits, hunger, underdevelopment, etc., but Scarlett is HUGE. Oxfam is certainly overjoyed to have become one of Scarlett's acquisitions.

I notice that Becks took a "hiatus" just before one "Ashley Parker" published the story about all those kind-of-similar-looking DC bloggers in the Times. Has anyone ever seen Ms. Becks and the alleged "Ms. Parker" in the same room? Coincidence? Oh the humanity!
