Re: About the MLA

I probably should be in the bay area around then, but not for the MLA.

Could be there myself, for similarly unrelated reasons. If there is such a thing as modern language, dear ben, you are in the process of murdering it in its sleep.

I'll most likely be there towards the end of the period in question, though my activities wrt modern language during this time will be limited to the speaking and reading of it, but not the convening about it.

I will, of course, be there, and I reiterate, in case you missed it, that, if no other venue is decided upon that is better, my ex-roommate (who sometimes lurks here) will be hosting me at his house in Davis and we would be delighted to throw a wild house party on the 29th or 30th.

And to drag my comment out from the other thread, if we've got more than 15 or so people showing, I've found a venue in SF that's available the 29th or the 30th, the caveat being that it'll probably be about $50/person. (Less if more people show up.)

I'm guessing that $50 covers the venue, but not an open bar and food? That's a bit out of my league if it's not an open bar.

Mostly what I remember about the MLA is that an important scene in a Kate Fansler mystery novel about fictional versions of Dorothy L. Sayers and Mary Renault was set there. I miss Kate Fansler and am sad that Amanda Cross will never write another book.

If I can escape from my parents and their insistence that I visit them for the entire holiday break, maybe I'd be back in the bay on the day of 12/30. I feel sort of guilty though, because I've been avoiding visiting my parents during the election, since I am considered uppity when I disagree with my parents that having a Black Democrat as president is not the end of the world. They wanted me to visit for Labor Day, then in mid-October during Fall break, and I bought them off with Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sigh. Filial piety sucks, especially when you have strained relationships with your parents whom you know will disown you one day so you might as well hang out now.

Anyway, parties sound fun! More Asian-looking people! Read, you can totally go as me. W-lfs-n will play along and call you Belle and quarrel with you and then by the end of the party you will make up and hug.

I'm pretty sure I can be in SF at MLA time. Christmas Day and New Year's Day are reserved for my family in Los Angeles, but I was thinking of visiting the boyfriend's family in the Yay Area on the days around and besides those dates.
