I would be turned off by the mention of Nick Cave.

"Unphased?" Really? I thought "unfazed."

I'm off, but before I go, this seems like a good place for my two favorite spam headlines of the last few months:

Poetry in bedaction

Teenage girl Obviously having affair with bat

I think it's the capitalized letter that really makes the second one.

I'd answer the first one if I were a man to 50.

Second, not so much. Tank Girl? But it's just not my thing.

The LRB personals have reached such a high pitch of self-conscious cleverology that it's hard to see how further progress might be made in the genre. But then I clicked the link to slol's effort.

I took "man to 50" to mean that the secretary is open to extreme polyandry.

Has anyone else noticed that the last three months, the market rises into the end of the month (when 401k contributions are made for people paid monthly) then immediately plummets a day or two after? Are some people are soaking wage earners by timing the market?

Yes. Me. And I'm getting rich doing it.

Market-timing is just another word for the market's self-corrections or something.

I thought it was just another word for nothing left to lose.

Isn't he giving you money right now? He'll take it back in monthly installments once he's 65 or so.

9: Even that pattern of returns shouldn't really soak the 401k investors, because the new money that's put into their open-end mutual funds goes in as cash that can then be invested at the lower equity prices over the next few days, rather than instantly turning into shares in the underlying stocks of the portfolio. Even though 401k fund investors would buy fewer shares of the mutual fund at the end of the month (due to the temporarily higher prices of the stocks underlying each individual share), that should be counterbalanced by the relatively higher value gained from that new cash being invested at the lower prices of the next couple days.

9: What do you mean the last three months? I don't think that describes the September-October juncture.

DJIA:
Sept 26: 11143
Sept 29: 10365
Sept 30: 10851
Oct 1: 10831
Oct 10: 8451
So there wasn't really a runup because of the big loss on the 29th (although some recovery on the 30th) but it was followed by a huge crash right after everyone dumped in that month's contributions.
Oct-Nov and Nov-Dec are much more apparent, although beginning of Nov didn't peak until the 4th of the month:
Oct 27: 8175
Oct 31: 9325
Nov 4: 9625
Nov 12: 8282
Nov 20: 7552
Nov 28: 8829
Dec 1: 8149
