Mind explicating the right parts, Mr. San Francisco Liberal?

The right parts: Orgasms are good. Peace is good. Attaining peace is as much about changing broader attitudes, values and vibes as it is promoting some narrow political program.

In addition to what Rob says, there's their argument (on their blog) that wars are all about sexual display. As they present it, it's facile and vapid, but surely there's quite a bit of psychology and group psychology at work in driving nations to war, and that's worth thinking about (and surely people have, right?).

I agree that this is ridiculous, because orgasms don't have the throw weight to take out a fleet of that size. (Even if you were to harness the utilitarians' mouse-orgasm warehouses to the task).

On the other hand, that guy in Indonesia doing the voodoo had the right idea. I got my chicken, I got my goat, I got my juju, and Bush is going to suffer a plague of frogs worse than anything he's ever imagined.

Seems like a more effective approach would be some sort of world-wide Lysistrata-type sex boycott. Talk about redirecting orgasmic energy.

I saw that story at the Orac blog and it brought back horrible memories of the 1987 Harmonic Convergence.

I think the Californian New Age La La type of person does not necessarily have to be equated with San Francisco Values. I think the weirdest New Agers are from the LA area, not SF.

15: and Marin!

But there is definitely a surreal detachment-from-reality that exists in San Franciso, that I think leads to profoundly sub-optimal outcomes, and that the rest of the country would do well to avoid.

Of course, the chances of the negative sort of San Francisco Values spreading to the rest of the country are small enough that publicly worrying about it is probably a good indicator that someone is being disingenuous...

OK, motherfucker, what are the profanity rules on this blog? Because I intend to violate the fuck out of them, and I mean violate.

This San Francisco values bullshit is the one piece of rhetoric that I can honestly call odious.

Southern folks are a bunch of racist halfwits, right?. They vote much more consistently than they spell, they make their own liquor and marry their cousins. Yet despite all of these established facts, nowhere in American political discourse do you find the term "Alabama Values."

Now I admit I'm biased. I'm from Oakland (, bitch). And God knows you can get away with spouting some crazy-ass shit around here, and if that makes you feel stupid, I am in no position to correct you. But the fact of the matter is, when people talk shit about the Bay Area, they're talking shit about our habit of letting people do whatever the fuck they want, be it Wicca, full contact ultimate frisbee, or buttfucking. If you have a problem with any of these activites, feel free not to engage in them. If you have a problem with me engaging in these activities (perhaps you do not approve, or feel it might reflect poorly on you), feel free to suck my cock at your leisure.

Respectfully yours,

FM

There's nothing wrong with making one's own liquor. A craft like any other, despite its illegality.

30: Indeed there is not, and I did not mean to imply otherwise. If I could, I would be a richer and prouder man,

What I meant was that there exist stereotypes both of Appalachian and Bay Area cultures, but somehow only one is acceptable to introduce in American politics.

And I do not suggest that the OP suck my cock out of malice, but rather as a means of (topical) emphasis: he may find things random BA people silly (as is reasonable), but to extend this dismissal to all of "San Francisco" is precisely as fallacious and bigoted as my dismissal of Southerners.

Foolishmortal, at least one of us here does make harsh remarks about cracker culture -- you just came along at the wrong time. And using politer language, at any time or place you choose I will be glad to explain why the US should not give more respect to "Southern Culture" or the "Southern Tradition" (the approved terminology).

Pretty much everyone here is more or less on the SF side of the fence. But the Intercontinental Simultaneous Orgasm was too much for us, even if that is what the fuck a lot of people want to do.

I realized last night that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the *values* of the global orgasm people. Their only problem is a superstitious understanding of *causation.* The error is purely empirical.

Comment 24 seems so obviously true because most of us already share the values of the global orgasm people. We've just had some expose to, you know, science.

I thought this idea was awesome, until I went to the site and found out that it's not really a simultaneous orgasm. People can do this at any time of the agreed-upon day. In private, even.

It would be much cooler if it were like Hands Across America, but with reach-arounds.

32: 34 really nails it: It is the false ascription of values, or lack thereof, that really bothers me. When you hear Gingrich or whoever talking about "San Francisco values", they're not disparaging the hippies' methods of bringing about world peace. They're defining San Franciscans as immoral.

And, yes, John, people do talk shit about the South, and the North, and the West. And I wouldn't change that if I could. But I'm talking about mainstream political discourse: Pelosi has "San Francisco values", Kerry is a "Massachusetts liberal". No one talks that way about the South, or Minnesota, or Alaska, nor should they. Its harnessing parochial regional contempt for political ends, and I find it odious.

I totally agree, FM. My strategy is to see and raise, so I start talking about what I think about cracker values. I'm a Yankee all the way back, and we fought a war against the Southern heritage. If one side can play, the other side can play.

I should probably start a group to go down to the cemetery here and decorate the Union graves, while cursing the unpunished traitor Robert E Lee. Heritage!

Yeah, so this is an example of Marin values. Very different from San Francisco values, which are less about orgasming for peace and more about orgasming with who(m)ever you please. If you don't get the difference, I have a bridge I'd like to sell youhave you cross.

FM is right that part of it is letting people do what- or whoever they want, but another part is that we don't really take political shit from anybody. Rents too high? Pass rent control! Developers taking over the city? Create a community zoning plan. People want to build giant luxury condos? Fine, but they better pony up for more affordable housing.

But yeah, when Bill O talks about it, he means teh gays.
