Re: This state is stupid.

Apparently Fox News has been making a stink about this.

Not like I really know, but he's probably right that it's illegal.

Here, people are suing to stop the state from running ads about needing ID to vote even after the court ruled the ID law unconstitutional.

Texas state law vs. international treaty obligations... who wins?

Shouldn't the City Country on the Hill be welcoming international observers? "Come right in—we'll show you how a real democracy does things."

I just recently found an old Doonesbury that I saved from 2004, which featured an aide approaching W:

W, caught mid-phone call "...he's claiming habeas Corpus Christi? That'll never fly under the long arm of Texas Justice!"

The aide says: "Sir, there's a fringe candidate named Duke who has challenged you a pronunciation bee."

W: "A pronunciation bee?...He's trying to make me look ridiculistic!"

Aide: "Yes sir. We believe so, sir."

My only point was being tangentially reminded of the first line, but I love the entire strip so much that I felt I had to keep going with it. I love how it just trails off, too. "We believe so, sir."

Fine, I'll be the one to troll this thread. It's easy to think of organizations which liberals regard with suspicion, and to which conservatives assign altruistic motives. To violate the analogy ban, what if the Catholic Church were to offer to oversee the elections?

#comeandtakeit

"Come and take it" is part of Texas lore. Texicans in Gonzales who refused to give up a cannon on the orders of their the Mexican government instead made a "Come and take it" flag.

Said flag was delightfully reprised at a "Save Our Schools" rally last year.

9: I regard the Republican Party with suspicion, and they are allowed not only to send observers but to challenge the ability of people to vote if they suspect the voter is not eligible.

If, on the other hand we're only talking about observers, I don't care if the John Birch Society sends one to my polling place so long as he stays in the corner and shuts the hell up.

Surely observers have experience in observing elections while barred from polling places. Talking to people outside the X-foot limit, for example.

Meanwhile, I'm sure "True the Vote" will be empowered to send in as many "observers" as they want. I can see why they wouldn't want the OSCE horning in on their turf.

Simmer down, Leonidas. I never said they thought of it first.

Col. McIntosh's defiant written response to the British demand included the following line: "As to surrendering the fort, receive this laconic reply: COME AND TAKE IT!".

I'm afraid you don't want to know the answer to that question, at least as adjudicate by our Supreme Court.

OTOH, the OSCE observers should be traveling on diplomatic passports, so they should be immune from arrest, and if they are arrested, a judge would be obliged to set them free. Assuming a minimum of respect for international law, in any event, which might not be a safe assumption.

|| Meanwhile, the CU inspired legal morass here continues to expand. As folks know, the Supreme Court summarily struck down our corporate contributions ban earlier this summer. As a follow-on, one of our federal judges also struck down our very low state contribution limits. Several Republican candidates, including the one for governor, immediately went back to the well(s) asking for big money, and got some, including $500k from the state party. Then the Ninth Circuit stayed the district court's ruling pending appeal. Earlier this week, a state court judge enjoined the governor candidate from spending the $500k. So now he's going to federal court to get an order preventing the state judge from enjoining him from spending that money. FYI, the AG is the Dem candidate for governor. |>

The guy who argued Texas' side in the case in 28 was soon-to-be Senator Ted Cruz, whom Mother Jones has christened "the Hispanic Barack Obama".

I have a CU question. What prevents foreign governments from contributing generously to PACs that support one candidate or another? The foreigners could either contribute directly or through an individual, who could be seen byu the foreign government as a dual citizen.
